Second year art and design students at Gower College Swansea’s Gorseinon campus welcomed Ian Simmons, Lecturer on the BA Illustration course at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Swansea College of Art, for an engaging and creative workshop.

Two students sat a white desk working creatively in a lecture room.

The session was delivered to a group of 18 students and began with an introductory presentation outlining the BA Illustration course at Swansea College of Art, providing learners with an insight into university-level study and creative progression routes.

Following the presentation, students took part in an interactive anthropomorphic character design brief led by Ian Simmons. The activity encouraged creativity, experimentation and problem-solving, with students fully engaged throughout the workshop. Feedback from learners was extremely positive, and the resulting drawings will contribute directly to their coursework sketchbooks.

Gower College Swansea Art and Design Lecturer Natalie Tucker praised the session, saying:

“I was so impressed with what they had produced with you. The drawings will form part of their sketchbooks that will go towards their coursework. The students all really enjoyed themselves and loved the work they produced during the workshop.”

Ian Simmons highlighted the importance of the ongoing partnership between the two institutions:

“We have a great relationship with Gower College that has been built up over the years and we regularly run reciprocal visits. We visit their campus to present to the students, and they also bring learners to our Dynevor campus for taster days. These types of activities are invaluable in terms of potential recruitment, and we have several Gower College alumnae among our current cohort.”

The visit further strengthens the established collaboration between Gower College Swansea and Swansea College of Art, supporting students’ creative development and helping them make informed decisions about their future progression.
