UWTSD Graduate Helps BMW Make Motorsport History with World Championship Triumph
UWTSD Motorcycle Engineering graduate Ilias Iatrakis has played an important role in helping BMW Motorrad rewrite motorsport history, contributing to the team’s stunning triumph in the 2026 FIM Endurance World Championship.
As part of the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team’s engineering operation, Ilias supported the effort that delivered the first-ever world endurance title for a European manufacturer, secured with a commanding victory at the Bol d’Or 24‑hour race in France.
BMW Motorrad’s success at Le Castellet marked a defining moment for the manufacturer, which clinched the championship with a dominant performance at the season-ending Bol d’Or. Riders Michael van der Mark, Markus Reiterberger and Steven Odendaal guided the #37 BMW M 1000 RR to victory, sealing the title by four points over YART Yamaha.
The achievement also completed a remarkable turnaround for BMW Motorrad, whose 2025 title hopes were dashed by a late technical failure at the same event with less than half an hour remaining.
Across the 2026 season, the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team established itself as a consistent championship contender, taking victory at the 8 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and earning a historic podium at the Suzuka 8 Hours before securing the world title in France.
Ilias said: “ Winning the FIM Endurance World Championship was a very special achievement. My role within BMW Motorrad Motorsport is Electronics Application Engineer, with a focus on motorcycle performance.
“I work on engine calibration, ECU control strategies, and fuel and power management, using data analysis and rider feedback to optimise the interaction between the engine, electronics, and rider throughout race weekends. Between events, I also support the preparation of the race bikes and contribute to the team’s technical organisation.
“Endurance racing is a huge team effort, and much of the success is created long before the race begins. Months of preparation go into making the motorcycle not only fast, but also reliable and efficient enough to perform consistently for up to 24 hours.
“During the race itself, riders, mechanics, and engineers all depend on one another. Effective communication, trust, and teamwork are essential, as even a small mistake can have significant consequences.
“One of the things I valued most about studying Motorcycle Engineering at UWTSD is the combination of broad technical and theoretical knowledge alongside detailed, subject-specific expertise.
“The course covered areas such as thermodynamics, electronics, data analysis, chassis dynamics, and aerodynamics, providing me with the foundation to understand and communicate effectively with the specialists across the many departments involved in factory racing today.
“Equally important were the hands-on workshop activities and university racing opportunities, which allowed me to apply engineering theory to real motorcycles and gain experience working within a race team environment.
“Going from studying Motorcycle Engineering at UWTSD to contributing to BMW Motorrad’s first Endurance World Championship title just two years after graduating is something I am extremely proud of.
“The technical knowledge, practical experience, and understanding of motorcycle engineering that I gained at UWTSD continue to provide an important foundation for the work I do today.”
UWTSD Senior Lecturer Owen Williams said: “We are incredibly proud to see Ilias play a part in such a historic achievement for BMW Motorrad and international motorcycle racing. Becoming the first European manufacturer to win the FIM Endurance World Championship is a remarkable milestone, and it is fantastic to see one of our graduates contributing to success at the very highest level of the sport.
“Ilias’s journey reflects the talent, dedication and technical expertise developed through our Motorcycle Engineering programmes. His success demonstrates the impact that UWTSD graduates are making across the global motorsport industry, and we are delighted to celebrate this achievement with him.”
Ilias’s involvement in this world championship-winning campaign highlights the influence of UWTSD graduates within elite motorsport engineering and reinforces the University’s reputation for producing industry-ready engineers capable of performing at the highest level.
Everyone at UWTSD extends their congratulations to Ilias and the entire BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team on this outstanding achievement and their place in motorsport history.
