Students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) BA Acting and BA Set Design & Production courses are looking forward to performing their stage production of Blood Wedding.

Held at the Llwyfan on UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus, with performances on November 21st, 22nd, 28th, and 29th.

Directed by Duncan Hallis, this bold interpretation of Federico García Lorca’s classic tragedy explores themes of love, fate, and family honour through a visually rich and emotionally charged performance. He said

“It’s been really exciting to work with a company of such hard-working and dedicated students, who are so willing to step out of their comfort zones to develop their skills and practice.

With a text that has been produced and adapted so many times, it can be hard to find new angles, but this team has stayed curious and enthusiastic to deliver a playful and surprising presentation of Lorca’s legendary tragedy.”

Set against the backdrop of a wedding celebration, Blood Wedding invites the audience to witness Lorca’s tragic explosion of love, hate, and revenge. As friends and family gather to celebrate the happy couple, they are drawn into a world where passion collides with duty, and must confront a haunting question: What happens when love defies the structures of family, class, and social tradition?

This new adaptation is satirical, surreal, and surprising, blending traditional storytelling with modern theatrical elements. Audiences can expect an immersive experience, where the line between guest and spectator blurs, with scenes unfolding all around them. Audience members will be both seated and standing at different points during the performance, though chairs will be available if required.

Students have been working on the production as part of their major project. This opportunity is a chance for the students to have a taste of what it’s like to work within the theatre industry by working with other creative students outside their course, to showcase their vocational skills, to network and to create an impression to employ in front of industry professionals.

This production highlights the exceptional talents of UWTSD’s Acting students, who will bring humour, poignancy, and depth to the stage, alongside the Set Design & Production team, whose immersive design will make the audience feel that they’re a guest at the wedding.

For Ashley Knibbs, a third-year Set Design & Production student:

“Having the opportunity to work as a Stage Manager alongside a professional director has been a highlight of my University experience. This is definitely not a role I was expecting to enjoy as much as I have but it has really helped to widen my understanding of my career opportunities and personal confidence levels. Blood Wedding is such a unique script, and getting to work so closely with the actors and director has really made every day exciting.”

Lynne Seymour, UWTSD’s Academic Director for Design & Performing Industries, said:

“It has been a joy to watch our final year Acting and Set Design & Production students bring Lorca’s Blood Wedding to life through such an ambitious and immersive approach. This project is the first production of the final year of their training and celebrates their creativity, collaboration, and craft. Working under the direction of professional director Duncan Hallis has given them an invaluable insight into the realities of the industry and the professional rehearsal process, helping them to build meaningful connections that will support their careers beyond graduation.

“I am incredibly proud of the work they have produced. Their passion, commitment, and talent are evident in every element of this production, and it is wonderful to see their artistic voices shine through so powerfully. I’m genuinely excited to see the performance and to share their achievements with a wider audience.”

With dynamic direction, visually striking set design, and authentic theatrical performances, UWTSD’s Blood Wedding promises to be a memorable, thought-provoking experience for all.
