If you already have an early years qualification, there is an option to top-up to a full BA (Hons) degree. This flexible route allows you to directly enter the programme and build on your existing knowledge, helping you to advance your career in early years education.

This degree not only gives you a deep understanding of children’s well-being and how to support them but also prepares you for a range of career opportunities including possible progression to PGCE Primary teaching training qualification. For full information read our visa application and guides.

All applicants will be required to provide a satisfactorily enhanced disclosure document from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

  • All our programmes are assessed by 100% coursework. There are no exams.

There are also opportunities for practical work experiences, supporting employability, professional development and careers.

    Welsh Opportunities

As a leading Welsh university, we are proud to offer dedicated support services and halls of residence for Welsh-speaking students, encouraging the sense of community and the feeling of a home away from home, including joining clubs and societies for Welsh speakers and becoming a member of our vibrant Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol branch.

    Opportunities to Learn Welsh

We also provide a variety of opportunities to learn and develop your Welsh language skills.

  • Students are required to apply for and obtain a UWTSD Enhanced Disclosure Barring Check (DBS). The fee for this is dependent on the DBS and is approximately £44.

Students are required to gain the equivalent of 700 hours practical experience in places such as early years settings. This will incur travelling costs and refreshment costs. (Only applies to Early Years Practitioner Status programmes)

Students may incur additional costs, as they are required to attend some module lectures with appropriate clothing for study outdoors.

Mandatory study experiences and enhancement activities are organised for students studying Early Years. The cost of travelling and the study on offer is covered by the Early Years discipline. However, students, for some visits, would need to supply their own refreshments.

Additionally, Early Years organises optional opportunities for students to gain additional qualifications during the latter part of their programme, for example, Health and Safety, Safeguarding. These incur costs for the students; the cost is determined by the provider.

The School also offers students optional opportunities to partake in visits beyond the campus, for example, Cardiff, London, Sweden and Canada. The costs of these optional visits are incurred by the students.

    Opportunities to Learn Welsh

  • Assessments are devised to maximise the link between theory and practice and allow students to demonstrate intellectual rigour and to reflect critically on their own workplace experiences.

Differing means of assessment are employed to enable students to demonstrate their learning in various ways such as reports, reflective work, presentations, individual and some group work, although there is always individual assessment. Formative assessment is utilised to enhance leaner understanding and to build learner confidence, as well as to identify where additional tutorial support may be needed. For formative assessments quizzes can be enjoyable and work well. Students are encouraged to bring their own research to class for sharing with others who contribute.

Feedback will generally be provided through the online platform, Moodle. The programme team also provide face to face feedback in order to ensure that students appreciate and learn from the feedback provided and are able to discuss all aspects of their performance and lessons which may be applied in the future.

In summary, in order to create competent reflective practitioners, the programme will:

    • Encourage students to undertake independent reading and research to broaden their individual knowledge and understanding of the subject
    • Employ assessment methods that place an emphasis on critical analysis, evaluation and reflective practice
    • Test the knowledge and skill base through assessed coursework and practical exercises.
  • As an institution, we seek to continually enhance the student experience and as a result, additional costs may be incurred by the student on activities that will add value to their education.

It is possible to complete this programme of study without any additional costs. Students may wish to register for an ILM L5 Coaching and Mentoring certificate at an additional cost of £160.

  • You may be eligible for funding to help support your study. To find out about scholarships, bursaries and other funding opportunities that are available, please visit our Bursaries and Scholarships section.

  • The programme is focused on developing mature students’ leadership and management skills and their application to the workplace.

After successful completion of the standalone level 4 programme, students can leave the University with both a level 4 Cert HE and an ILM level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management. Most successful students choose to progress and to continue their full-time studies by undertaking a 2-year BA top-up. The 2-year BA in Leadership & Management also offers progressing students professional recognition given by the Institute of Leadership and Management, whose mission is to “Inspire Great Leadership”.

Employer engagement provides opportunities for networking and greater understanding of the field of study, and helps the university anticipate the potential future needs of employers. Employers and Awarding bodies are consulted at the point of the material design and module content as well as an input on the programme in shape of speakers from industry.

Further information

  • Early Years encourages and values applications from students who are returning to education, as they will have experiences and life skills that could support their entry onto the degree.

Generally, students will have attained or will be working towards, a relevant level 3 childcare/education qualification such as NNEB, CACHE, BTEC, NVQ, A-levels. However, other experience is also valuable. They will also be working or volunteering regularly in an early years setting or a workplace that provides services for young children and families.

    Admissions Advice and Support

We may make you a lower offer based on a range of factors, such as your background, experiences and individual circumstances. This is known as ‘Contextual Admissions’.

If your qualification doesn’t have a UCAS tariff equivalence, you don’t have traditional entry qualifications or you have accredited prior learning, please contact our enquiries team as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience.

    Alternative entry routes

If this course interests you, but you don’t have the entry requirements to join our bachelor’s degree you could consider:

    • ‘with Foundation Year’. This route is designed to give you extra support as it provides you with an additional year (full-time) of supported study.

Once you successfully complete your Foundation Year studies, you will automatically advance onto the main degree.

    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This is a one-year course and is equivalent to the first year of the three year, full-time bachelor’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your CertHE studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remaining two years of the bachelor’s degree.

These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree.

    English language requirements

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

For full information read our visa application and guides.

Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study.

All applicants will be required to provide a satisfactorily enhanced disclosure document from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

  • All our programmes are assessed by 100% coursework. There are no exams.

We have found that using a varied range of assessment methods increases employability skills. Employers seek graduates who are problem-solvers and who have a range of transferable employability skills.

Assessment provides opportunities to develop skills such as the ability to work in a team, have effective oral and written communication, while using a range of information-sharing methods, including briefing papers, academic posters, group debates and professional discussions. There are also opportunities for practical work experiences, supporting employability, professional development and careers.

Bilingual and Welsh-medium study is at the heart of our provision; you can choose to enrol on the Welsh-medium or English-medium programme and present your assignments in either language.

If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.

  • You may be eligible for funding to help support your study. To find out about scholarships, bursaries and other funding opportunities that are available, please visit our Bursaries and Scholarships section.

  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

Employer engagement provides opportunities for networking and greater understanding of the field of study, and helps the university anticipate the potential future needs of employers.
