Philosophy and Anthropology (BA Hons)

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
96 - 112 UCAS points

The BA (Hons) Philosophy and Anthropology programme offers a unique opportunity to explore two disciplines that delve into the most fundamental questions about humanity and society. By combining philosophy and anthropology, this joint honours degree allows students to develop a deep understanding of cultural identities, societal analysis, and the ideas shaping humanity’s journey through history and into the modern world.

Philosophy:

Unlike other subjects, philosophy focuses not on what to think but on how to think. It encourages exploration of profound questions: Who are we? What is our place in the world? How should we live?. Through the study of ethics, critical thinking, and the works of historical philosophers, students will engage with debates from both analytic and continental traditions. The course also introduces Eastern philosophy, offering diverse perspectives on some of life’s most enduring questions.

Students will examine the history of Western philosophy, gaining insights into key thinkers and their ideas. From ancient to modern philosophical debates, the programme equips students with structured thinking, methodical argumentation, and the ability to respond thoughtfully to counterarguments.

Anthropology:

Anthropology focuses on the richness of human diversity and the ways societies evolve and interact. It examines how people live, think, and express themselves across cultures, offering a comprehensive view of humanity’s place in the world. Students will explore themes like cultural identities, the impact of globalisation, and pressing contemporary challenges through rigorous societal analysis.

This joint programme connects the philosophical exploration of big ideas with anthropology’s practical approach to studying real-world human experiences. It is perfect for students who want to combine theoretical depth with cross-cultural understanding.

This joint honours programme is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing students to choose from a wide range of modules that reflect their interests. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to develop critical academic skills, such as analytical reasoning, clear communication, and the ability to engage with complex debates.

Graduates from this programme are well-equipped to address contemporary issues, applying their skills to careers in education, research, policy-making, and beyond.

Creative Writing and Philosophy (Full Time) (BA Hons)

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
96-112 UCAS Points, plus interview

This joint honours degree in Creative Writing and Philosophy offers you the chance to explore two complementary disciplines. Combining the craft of storytelling with deep, analytical thinking, this course will nurture your creative expression while developing your ability to tackle the big questions of life.

In Creative Writing, you will immerse yourself in the writing craft, guided by expert tutors who are published writers themselves. In your first year, you will explore poetry, prose, and drama, gaining a strong foundation in different forms of writing. As you progress, you will refine your skills in creating compelling works, focusing on elements such as voice, form, and place. Modules in fiction and poetry writing will help you build your technical expertise, while self-reflective and editorial skills are developed through practical workshops.

The programme also prepares you for professional opportunities. You will learn about publication and performance and gain practical experience in areas like digital content creation, screenwriting, journalism, and even writing for games. These skills will allow you to build a diverse writing portfolio, preparing you for a range of roles in the creative industries.

Alongside Creative Writing, the Philosophy aspect of the degree introduces you to profound and challenging questions. Philosophy is not about being told what to think but learning how to think critically and creatively. You will explore topics in philosophy and ethics, political philosophy, and applied ethics, focusing on contemporary issues such as justice, power, and identity.

Modules cover both the history of philosophy and contemporary philosophical debates, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the field. You will study foundational thinkers and theories while applying philosophical ideas to modern challenges. By developing your analytic skills and engaging in critical analysis, you will learn to construct clear arguments and evaluate complex problems.

This interdisciplinary degree equips you with a unique combination of creative and analytical skills, preparing you for careers in the creative sectors, education, publishing, or any field that values innovative thinking and communication. Whether you aspire to craft impactful stories, contribute to philosophical discussions, or pursue both paths, this course provides the tools and knowledge to achieve your ambitions.

    Cyfleoedd Cymraeg a Chymreig

A ninnau’n brifysgol flaenllaw yng Nghymru, rydym yn falch o gynnig gwasanaethau cymorth a neuaddau preswyl arbennig i fyfyrwyr Cymraeg eu hiaith, gan annog ymdeimlad o gymuned a chartref oddi cartref, gan gynnwys ymuno â chlybiau a chymdeithasau i siaradwyr Cymraeg a dod yn aelod o’n cangen fywiog y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Rydym hefyd yn darparu amrywiaeth o gyfleoedd i ddysgu a datblygu eich sgiliau Cymraeg.

  • Mae’n bosibl cwblhau’r rhaglen astudio hon heb unrhyw gostau ychwanegol.

Efallai y bydd myfyrwyr yn dymuno prynu gwerslyfrau ar gyfer modiwlau fel y Prosiect Annibynnol, ond nid yw hyn yn ofynnol ac ni fydd yn cael unrhyw effaith ar y radd derfynol.

  • Efallai eich bod yn gymwys i gael arian i helpu i gefnogi eich astudiaethau. I ddysgu am ysgoloriaethau, bwrsarïau a chyfleoedd ariannu eraill sydd ar gael, ewch i’n hadran Bwrsarïau ac Ysgoloriaethau<.

  • Fel darparwr cymeradwy, bydd heddluoedd yn gallu cydnabod y radd fel un sy’n addas i’r diben a bydd hynny o blaid y myfyrwyr wrth iddynt wrth wneud cais.

Mae’r Brifysgol yn cydweithio â Heddlu De Cymru a Heddlu Gwent. Yn hanesyddol, mae nifer o’n graddedigion wedi mynd ymlaen i weithio gyda’r heddluoedd hyn oherwydd y cysylltiadau sydd wedi’u gwneud. O ganlyniad i’r cydweithio hwn, mae nifer o hyfforddwyr yr heddlu yn gweithio gyda’r tîm i gyflwyno arfer proffesiynol ychwanegol a darparu sesiynau ymarferol HYDRA i’r myfyrwyr.

Mae’r rhaglen heddlu gwirfoddol sydd wedi’i chynnal rhwng PCYDDS a Heddlu De Cymru ers 2012 yn rhoi cyfle i fyfyrwyr gael profiad gwerthfawr o blismona ymarferol sydd hefyd yn gwella eu cyfleoedd wrth gamu ymlaen.

Operational Policing (Part-time) (BSc Hons)

Distance Learning
15 Months Full-time
240 credits at Level 4 and 5 in a related subject

The BSc Operational Policing (Level 6 Top-Up) is a tailored programme for experienced serving police officers.

This 15-month, Level 6 top-up course offers an opportunity for officers to achieve a recognised academic qualification, building on their extensive operational experience and professional training.

Eligible applicants will have completed key police qualifications, including the Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) Level 1, achieved Full Occupational Competency, and gained at least two years of post-probation experience. These qualifications, alongside the underlying work-based learning and occupational competency portfolio, are recognised as equivalent to Levels 4 and 5 of an undergraduate degree through a Recognition of Prior Certified Learning (RPCL) process. This means officers can join directly at the final year to complete their degree.

This programme aligns with the College of Policing’s ambition to provide continuing professional development for officers who joined the force before degree requirements were introduced in 2019. It has been developed in partnership with Welsh police forces, ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of modern policing.

Delivered through a flexible distance learning model, the programme allows officers to balance study with their demanding roles.

This degree is open to officers across all 42 forces in England and Wales and provides a vital academic pathway for officers to enhance their skills, align with the evolving demands of the profession, and achieve an accredited qualification that recognises their valuable contributions to policing.

  • The assessments have been designed by the programme team collectively, to ensure they form a cohesive whole and meet the requirements of the College of Policing’s PEQF curriculum for the Pre-Join Professional Policing degree.

The key purpose of the assessment scheme is to enable students to demonstrate individually that they have met the aims of the programmes and achieved the learning outcomes at the standard required for the level of study.  Assessment will also be used to provide feedback to students so as to assist in subsequent learning.

Each module will be assessed summatively through a range of individual assessment tasks but formative methods are also used. Formative assessment is carried out through practical exercises that are undertaken and discussed in class, role-plays, negotiations, presentations by students and the sessions devoted to reviewing exams after these have been marked.

A range of summative assessment methods will be employed.  Exams are primarily (but not exclusively) used to test knowledge and understanding.

Coursework and practical assessments also test knowledge and understanding but tend to focus more on the development of cognitive, practical and key skills.  Such methods are highly appropriate to the nature of the policing discipline as they facilitate authentic, workplace relevant assessment and practice. Coursework and practicals will be set in a variety of formats; these include:

    • Essays
    • Reports
    • Portfolios
    • Research projects
    • Presentations.
  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

    Welsh Opportunities

As a leading Welsh university, we are proud to offer dedicated support services and halls of residence for Welsh-speaking students, encouraging the sense of community and the feeling of a home away from home, including joining clubs and societies for Welsh speakers and becoming a member of our vibrant Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol branch.

    Opportunities to Learn Welsh

We also provide a variety of opportunities to learn and develop your Welsh language skills.

  • It is possible to complete this programme of study without any additional costs.

Students may wish to purchase textbooks for modules, such as the Independent Project, but this is not a requirement and will have no bearing on the final grade.

  • You may be eligible for funding to help support your study. To find out about scholarships, bursaries and other funding opportunities that are available please visit our Scholarships and Bursaries section.

  • As an approved provider, forces will be able to recognise the degree as one that is fit for purpose and ensure that students are seen in a positive light on application.

The University works in collaboration with South Wales Police and Gwent Police forces. Historically, a number of our graduates have gone on to work with these forces due to the links that have been made. As a result of this collaboration, we have a number of police trainers that work with the team to deliver extra professional practice and provide HYDRA practical sessions for the students.

The volunteer police programme that has been run with UWTSD and South Wales Police since 2012 provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable practical policing experience which also enhances their progression opportunities.

Archaeology and Anthropology (Full-time) (BA Hons)

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
96-112 UCAS Points

This joint-honours programme offers a dynamic and engaging way to explore the human past and present, giving you the opportunity to study two fascinating disciplines that help us understand how people have lived, thought, and interacted throughout history and across different cultures.

You will be guided by experts in both fields and gain practical skills through hands-on experiences, fieldwork, and the use of modern technologies.

The degree is structured to be flexible, allowing you to tailor your studies to your interests. You will choose from a variety of modules in both Archaeology and Anthropology, which means you can focus on areas that excite you the most.

Archaeology

In Archaeology, you will learn to uncover and interpret the material remains left behind by past societies, including artefacts such as pottery, tools, and bones. By studying these objects, you will piece together the stories of how ancient people lived, what their societies looked like, and how they interacted with their environments. You will also examine larger features like historic buildings, monuments, and landscapes, which tell us about human development and the changing world over time. In addition, you will explore theoretical and ethical questions about the past, such as the significance of heritage, the use of digital tools, and the ways in which new technologies allow us to analyse ancient DNA and other materials.

Anthropology

The Anthropology part of the degree takes you deeper into understanding human diversity. You will explore the cultural practices, beliefs, and ways of life of people around the world, examining how societies have evolved over time. The programme looks at contemporary global challenges, such as the effects of globalisation, and encourages you to think critically about cultural identities and human behaviour. By combining theoretical insights with real-world case studies, Anthropology gives you the tools to understand the complexities of human existence and the different ways societies shape our lives today.

By the end of the programme, you will have gained a deep understanding of human history, both from the archaeological perspective of material remains and the anthropological study of culture and society.

You will develop key skills, including analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication, that are essential for success in many professional careers. The ability to understand complex debates and make clear, well-reasoned arguments will be valuable both during your studies and in your future career.

This course will equip you to work in various fields, such as museums, heritage management, research, and international development, as well as pursue further study in archaeology, anthropology, or related areas. It offers you a unique opportunity to explore the rich diversity of human life, both in the past and present, and prepare for a future that can take you in many exciting directions.

Mae’r DBA yn ddoethuriaeth broffesiynol, sy’n golygu ei fod yn cyfuno astudiaeth academaidd â phrofiad yn y byd go iawn. Mae’n cyfateb i PhD, ond yn hytrach na chanolbwyntio ar theori yn unig, mae’n seiliedig ar ymchwil gymhwysol. Mae hyn yn golygu bod myfyrwyr yn gweithio ar broblemau gwirioneddol o’u swyddi neu ddiwydiannau eu hunain ac yn ceisio dod o hyd i atebion sy’n ddefnyddiol ac ystyrlon.

Byddwch yn edrych ar wahanol safbwyntiau a syniadau am y mater, ac yn profi atebion a allai arwain at newid go iawn. Mae’r rhan hon o’r cwrs yn bersonol iawn ac yn eich helpu i dyfu fel meddyliwr ac arweinydd.

Trwy gydol y cwrs, byddwch yn ymuno â grŵp o weithwyr proffesiynol o sawl cefndir a diwydiannau. Mae hyn yn rhoi cyfleoedd gwych i chi rwydweithio a dysgu gan eraill. Byddwch hefyd yn adeiladu sgiliau cryf mewn arweinyddiaeth, meddwl creadigol, a gwneud penderfyniadau, gan helpu gyda’ch dyrchafiad gyrfa eich hun a datblygiad proffesiynol.

Nid yw’r Doethur mewn Gweinyddu Busnes yn ymwneud ag ennill teitl yn unig. Mae’n ymwneud â gwneud gwahaniaeth - dod â syniadau newydd i’r gweithle, gyrru arloesedd, a dod yn weithiwr proffesiynol busnes mwy meddylgar a medrus.
