Background

Gavin Kirby’s background is in Technical Illustration and Information Design. This has then progressed into Graphic Design where he approaches developing design solutions that are based on the principals of the Human-Centred Design Model. 

Specialist Subjects

  • Gavin’s core teaching skills are relating to the technical side of Graphic Design. This ranges from teaching software basics to more advanced principals, technologies, and processes. The main focus of his teaching is on the core Graphic Design skills.
  • In level 6 (third year), Gavin delivers a series of lectures that are aimed at changing the mindset of the final year students and to help prepare them for graduation and employment. This valuable content helps to give students an edge when they graduate.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Lecturer in Graphic Design with 20+ years of experience. Focusing on Typography, layout design, Visual Hierarchy, semiotics, UX design, UI design, digital applications, and traditional processes.

Freelance Graphic Designer with 25+ years’ experience. Freelance work includes editorial design, brochure design, technical illustration, branding, advertising, web design, packaging design, and exhibition / design for public display.

Gavin has sat on several internal course validation committees for BA and MA programmes of study.
