Background

Dr Kevin Rogers brings over 20 years of professional and academic experience in engineering, spanning research, design, manufacture, and testing of complex instrumentation. With a background in both industry and higher education, he bridges research with practical application.

He began his career at a Swansea University spin-out, developing optoelectronic devices for medical and architectural lighting. Later, he was awarded the prestigious Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship (POWIS), undertaking doctoral research on novel illumination systems for digital projection and medical endoscopy.

Building on this foundation, Dr Rogers spent five years as a Senior Systems Engineer at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory’s Space Division, developing astronomical instrumentation for ground- and space-based applications.

Today, he draws on his extensive research and industry background to enrich his teaching across engineering courses, specialising in engineering design.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Dr Kevin Rogers has led and contributed to the development several complex systems, along with contributing to the academic community via publications and presentations at conferences. Some of these projects have included:

SPICE - A European Space Agency (ESA) funded project, developing an imaging spectrometer which will operate at extreme ultra violet wavelengths. This a part of the ESA Solar Orbiter which was launched January 2020.

ISS Cameras - The development of two Earth observing (5m and 10m resolutions) cameras, which have been installed onboard the International Space Station.

WEAVE - This is a project funded by several international research and governing bodies. Weave is an addition to the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma; it will allow the spectral mapping of celestial objects.

LED mulitplexing - A series of novel methods of combining the light into etendue restrictive optical systems, including development of a patented phosphor system.
