Background

Ryan L. Moule is Head of Undergraduate Photography and an artist-researcher whose practice and pedagogy operate at the intersection of photography, moving image, and installation. He holds a First Class Honours degree from Swansea Metropolitan University and an MA with Distinction from the Royal College of Art, and is currently completing a practice-based PhD that develops the conceptual and material concerns that underpin his artistic work, with a particular focus on hauntology, temporality, and the persistence of the trace across analogue and digital technologies.

Specialist Subjects

  • Ryan's research employs unstable materials and contingent processes as a critical method for destabilising the assumed passivity of contemporary visual culture.
  • Central to Ryan's doctoral thesis is an examination of time and its passing, articulated through a hauntological framework.
  • Moule’s interdisciplinary approach enables movement across still and moving image, sculptural installation, and site-responsive display.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Alongside his research practice, Ryan's role as Head of Undergraduate Photography places critical enquiry and experimentation at the centre of teaching and curriculum design. His pedagogical approach emphasises the integration of theory and practice, supporting students to situate their work within historical, philosophical, and contemporary artistic contexts. Through mentoring and leadership, he advocates for risk-taking, sustained research, and reflective making as essential components of photographic education.

Ryan has exhibited in national and international contexts, including at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; The Photographers’ Gallery, London; ICA, London; Flowers Gallery, London; Jerwood Space, London; Ffotogallery, Wales; FORMAT Festival, Derby; Materia Gallery, Rome; and Serchia Gallery, Bristol. His work contributes to ongoing critical debates surrounding materiality, memory, and the shifting role of photography within contemporary art and research-led practice.
