Angharad Lee and Jennifer Lunn Spearhead Inspirational Collaboration with Huggard to Address Homelessness Through Musical Production

UWTSD’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts is proud to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with Huggard, Wales’ leading centre for people who are homeless and sleeping rough in Cardiff. 

This unique partnership aims to combine the power of the arts with community engagement to address the pressing issue of homelessness. Huggard was set up more than 30 years ago in the city centre and is open 24/7.  The charity has two onsite hostels, emergency accommodation and an Intervention (day) Centre.  It provides a range of specialist services, including a Harm Reduction Service, which also operates around the clock. 

The core of this collaboration lies in the upcoming musical production of “Honk,” based on the classic tale of the Ugly Duckling. Director Jennifer Lunn plans to set the musical against the backdrop of homelessness, shedding light on the challenges faced by those without a stable place to call home.

As part of this innovative project, the collaboration extends beyond the stage. The designer associated with the production will work directly with Huggard’s clients to create props and other elements for the show. Moreover, Huggard will have a visible presence at the performances, providing an opportunity to raise awareness about what it does and why. 

“We believe that the power of storytelling and artistic expression can be a catalyst for change,” says Angharad Lee, Acting Lead at UWTSD’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts. “By combining our creative talents with the impactful work of Huggard, we aim to raise awareness and support for those facing homelessness in our community.

“This collaboration represents a unique opportunity for students and the community to engage with the critical issue of homelessness through the medium of the arts. Not only will it enrich the learning experience for those involved in the production, but it will also contribute to a meaningful cause by giving back to the homeless community in Cardiff.”

Jennifer Lunn, Director, adds, “Honk is a tale of resilience and finding one’s identity, and by setting it against the backdrop of homelessness, we hope to inspire empathy and action. It’s a project that goes beyond the stage, creating a real impact in the lives of those we engage with.”

Ellen Bryant, who leads Huggard’s Development, Volunteering and Community Engagement team, added:  

“At Huggard we offer a range of services designed to provide clients with the specialist help they need to rebuild their lives.  Many have been traumatised by past experiences and from living rough on the streets.  Being part of the production of Honk will give them a much-needed break from their everyday lives as well as boosting their confidence and self-esteem.”

Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts are committed to providing opportunities for young people to visit and watch theatre at an affordable price. There has already been huge interest in the project with the March 21st matinee performance already sold out.
