Birmingham Student Overcomes Challenges to Achieve Degree Success and Pursue Social Work Career
A mature student from Birmingham is celebrating a significant academic achievement this month as she graduates with a first class honours BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care degree from the University of Wales Trinity Saint’s (UWTSD’s) Birmingham campus.
Vilma Ibe, 56, has spent more than 30 years working in health and social care, supporting children, young people, families, and vulnerable adults. Inspired by her late parents, a mental health nurse and a community-focused bishop, Vilma has dedicated her career to helping others and advocating for those facing adversity.
“Growing up, I witnessed my parents compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to helping others, “ she said. Their example shaped my values from an early age and inspired me to pursue a career in health and social care. Through their guidance, I developed a deep sense of empathy, a strong desire to support vulnerable individuals, and a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference in people’s lives.”
Returning to education as a mature student presented its own challenges. As a neurodivergent learner with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD, Vilma overcame self-doubt and barriers from earlier educational experiences to excel in higher education.
Vilma said: “Completing this degree has shown me that my neurodiversity does not limit my potential and that success can be achieved with the right support, determination, and mindset. I hope my journey encourages others to believe in themselves regardless of their age, background, or perceived barriers.”
During her studies, Vilma enjoyed exploring mental health, psychology, public health, and research methods. Her dissertation examined the effectiveness of healthcare provisions for individuals with schizophrenia in the UK, further strengthening her commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals through evidence-based practice.
Alongside her academic achievements, Vilma served as a student representative, advocating for fellow students and contributing to improvements in the student experience.
Vilma is now completing her first year of the MA Social Work programme at the University of Birmingham and undertaking a placement within Children’s Services. Her long-term ambition is to become a forensic social worker, working across mental health and criminal justice services to support vulnerable individuals and challenge inequalities.
She added: “It is never too late to pursue your ambitions, embrace new opportunities, and achieve your goals.”
