From Facilities Manager to Future Psychotherapist: UWTSD Student Shaheena Kenyon Embarks on a Life-Changing Journey
University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is proud to spotlight the inspirational journey of Shaheena Kenyon, a recent graduate of the BSc Psychology & Counselling programme, whose personal experiences, resilience, and passion for emotional wellbeing have set her on the path to becoming a psychotherapist.

Previously working as a Facilities Manager, Shaheena’s life took a transformative turn following personal challenges, the experience of becoming a parent, and her own journey through counselling. “These experiences awakened something in me,” she said. “They gave me a deeper appreciation for emotional wellbeing, not just my own, but others,’ too. That’s what led me to explore the world of psychology and counselling.”
Shaheena chose UWTSD for its unique combination of academic rigour and real-world relevance. “The practical element of the course alongside strong psychological theory was exactly what I was looking for,” she explained. “It was people-focused, thoughtfully structured, and grounded in real therapeutic practice.”
A returning learner and single parent, Shaheena faced several challenges along the way, including balancing studies with parenting and coming to understand her own neurodivergence. With the university’s support particularly through tailored learning strategies and a genuinely inclusive environment she was able to embrace her strengths and successfully complete her degree.
“The student support services were incredible. I learned to ask for help, pace myself, and embrace who I am rather than trying to mask it.”
One of the most impactful aspects of her studies was her dissertation project, which explored the effects of guided breathwork on state anxiety, a subject close to her heart. “It was an opportunity to combine theory with practical, evidence-based work. I wanted it to be useful, not just academically sound, but something that could genuinely help people,” she said.
Reflecting on her time at UWTSD, Shaheena highlights both the academic growth and the personal transformation she’s experienced. “The journey gave me lifelong friendships, renewed confidence, and a deepened sense of purpose. I’m more self-aware, compassionate, and equipped with the skills I need to make a difference.”
Now planning to pursue postgraduate study in psychotherapy, Shaheena is excited for the next chapter. “I want to continue blending lived experience, empathy, and evidence-based practice. This work matters to me, and I’m committed to helping others feel seen and supported.”
Shaheena wholeheartedly recommends the course to others: “Whether you want to become a counsellor or work in any helping profession, this course offers so much more than just a qualification, it offers personal growth, connection, and a foundation for meaningful work.”
