Graphic Design student inspired by Taith-funded study abroad experience in California

Graphic Design student Conrad Selby has described his Taith-funded semester studying at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), as “the best experience of my college life.”

Conrad is among a number of University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) students who have benefitted from the Welsh Government-funded programme, which supports international learning opportunities and enables students to broaden their academic, cultural, and personal horizons.

During his semester in California, Conrad embraced the opportunity to explore a new education system, experience American student life, and travel across the state, drawing inspiration from its diverse design culture.

“The opportunity to study at Cal State Fullerton was incredible,” said Conrad. “I was able to take classes outside my usual field of study, travel throughout California and experience different approaches to design. Everywhere I visited had its own unique character, which has inspired my work as a graphic designer.”

Alongside developing his creative practice, Conrad also built valuable professional skills. Presenting work to lecture theatres of more than 100 students helped strengthen his confidence in public speaking, while engaging with classmates encouraged him to become more confident in sharing ideas and participating in discussions.

“The American approach to learning really encouraged students to speak up and contribute,” he said. “That experience has made me much more confident in expressing my own ideas and presenting my work.”

Outside the classroom, Conrad immersed himself in local life, forming lasting friendships with fellow students and becoming part of the Fullerton community.

He added: “I’d recommend this opportunity to every student. Looking back, it has without doubt been the best experience of my time at university.”
