A mature student from Pencoed who overcame personal loss, serious illness and the demands of full-time work and caring responsibilities is celebrating her graduation from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).

Catherine Salter, 48, graduates today with a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET), having already completed a BA (Hons) in Inclusive Education at UWTSD.

Returning to education was a deliberate step for Catherine, whose own experience of school left her lacking confidence as a learner. Determined to rewrite her story, she chose UWTSD for its strong reputation in inclusive education and supportive, community-focused environment.

“I wanted to show that it is never too late to return to learning,” said Catherine. “My own experiences have inspired me to support others who may have faced similar challenges and to help create learning environments where everyone feels valued and capable of succeeding.”

Alongside her studies, Catherine completed her teaching placement at Bevan College, where she also works with young adults who have complex learning difficulties. The experience strengthened her commitment to inclusive education and developing independent living skills for learners with additional needs.

Her journey to graduation was marked by extraordinary personal challenges. During the course, Catherine lost both of her parents within six months, having become her mother’s main carer, and later survived a serious health scare while balancing full-time work and her studies.

Despite these setbacks, she credits the support of her family, friends, and tutors at UWTSD for helping her persevere.

“The compassion and encouragement I received from the university made all the difference,” she said. “Completing this qualification has given me confidence, resilience and the belief that growth is always possible, regardless of where you start.”

Catherine hopes to secure a tutor role within the Independent Living Skills (ILS) sector, where she can continue supporting young adults with additional learning needs.

Reflecting on her time at UWTSD, she said she would wholeheartedly recommend the course to others.

“It is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. The tutors genuinely care about their students, and the course equips you with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

As she graduates, Catherine hopes her story will encourage others who may be considering a return to education.

“My message is simple  - it is never too late to change your story.”
