Surface Pattern graduate showcased at international Heimtextil fair
Emily Elias, a University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) Surface Pattern and Textiles (BA Hons) graduate has showcased her work on an international stage after being selected for the New Talent Area at Heimtextil, the world’s leading international trade fair for interior textiles, held this year in Frankfurt, Germany.
Emily, who graduated from UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art in summer 2025, exhibited her collection Twill of the Feminine presenting her work alongside other emerging textile designers from across the globe. The prestigious New Talent Area celebrates innovative, forward-thinking creatives shaping the future of interior and surface design.
Her showcased collection explores an innovative material-led approach to decorative textiles, reimagining heritage-inspired prints as modern-day heirlooms. Rooted in a focus on designs that are both timeless and sustainable, the work reflects Emily’s distinctive handwriting and her interest in developing a lasting design language beyond short-lived trends.
Originally from Swansea, Emily pursued Surface Pattern and Textiles (BA Hons) after completing an Art & Design Foundation (CertHE). After working in an office role for two years, she made the decision to return to education and focus on a creative career.
She highlights the immersive, industry-standard nature of the course and the encouragement she received from her lecturers.
Emily said:
“The Surface Pattern and Textiles course really is an immersive experience into the print world. The level of technical skill and knowledge you acquire is set at industry standard. You are encouraged to be ambitious. My favourite part of the course was the opportunity to collaborate on live briefs with some amazing companies such as, Rolls Royce, MONKI and Patternbank… Just to name a few.”
The opportunity to exhibit at Heimtextil came about through a contact made while showcasing her work at New Designers as a student, underlining the value of industry-facing experiences embedded within the course.
Alongside this international recognition, Emily has also recently begun a permanent design role with IG Design Group, based in Caerphilly. IG Design Group is the UK’s largest gift wrap manufacturer, producing gift wrap and stationery collections for major UK high street brands and international retailers including Costco. The company is also renowned for designing and handmaking the Royal Family’s Christmas Crackers.
Emily joins a growing cohort of UWTSD Surface Pattern and Textiles graduates now working at IG Design Group, highlighting the strength of the university’s industry links and the course’s graduate employability.
Her selection for the New Talent Area at Heimtextil, alongside her recent role with IG Design Group, marks a strong early milestone following her graduation and reflects the confident start she is making in her design career.
