A temporary move to Swansea has led to a life-changing achievement for 23-year-old Louis Summerfield, who today graduates with a BA in Business Management from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).

Originally from Bolton, Louis never imagined himself attending university. After finishing school and moving straight into work in construction, higher education felt out of reach. However, a spontaneous decision to spend the summer in Swansea marked a turning point.

“I was going through a time in my life where felt I needed to be somewhere new,” he said. “I came to Swansea initially just to reset, but by September I was enrolled on a university course, which, honestly, I never thought I was capable of doing.”

Louis chose to study Business Management, driven by an interest in marketing and a curiosity about how organisations operate behind the scenes. Over three years, the course not only developed his academic knowledge but also helped shape his confidence and outlook.

“My aim was simply to do my best,” he said. “At school I wasn’t particularly academic, so to be graduating today just shows that if you work hard, you can accomplish things you never thought possible.”

Throughout his studies, Louis found a particular passion for marketing and leadership. Exploring real-world campaigns and understanding what makes an effective leader proved to be among the most rewarding aspects of his degree.

“The marketing side really stood out to me, especially looking at creative strategies used by real companies,” he said. “I also really enjoyed learning about leadership, what makes a good leader or manager. Those topics were made even more engaging through the way they were taught.”

Beyond the classroom, Louis embraced a wide range of opportunities offered by the university. He worked with student wellbeing initiatives, collaborated with tourism students on live event projects, and contributed to marketing activity within the Swansea Business School.

“The opportunities here have been incredible,” he said. “I’d encourage anyone to take them because you never know where they might lead.”

Adapting to a new city came with its challenges, but Swansea quickly became a place he now describes as “really fun” and rewarding. Academically, he also faced challenging moments but remained committed.

He said: “The assignments and exams pushed me, but they make you think and help you learn. I just kept working hard and putting my best into everything.”

Louis believes the course has provided far more than academic knowledge.

“It’s not just about business; it helps build your character. You learn leadership skills and life skills that you can apply to real-world situations, whether that’s work or personal life.”

“I’m still figuring things out, but I know I’ve developed an interest in marketing and that’s something I’d like to explore further,” he said. “To go from leaving school after GCSEs and working in construction, to now graduating from university, it’s something I never would have believed.”
