UWTSD celebrates local talent with Welsh premiere of Scopophobia
University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s BA Digital Media Production programme is proud to be collaborating with Carmarthen Film Club, Carmarthen Bay Film Festival and Theatrau Sir Gar to present the Welsh film premiere of Scopophobia.

Due to be screened on 7th September at the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen, Scopophobia is a chilling horror feature directed by Carmarthen born filmmaker, Aled Owen who studied at Coleg Sir Gar’s School of Art before attending a film school in Leeds, and later on went on to found film production company, Melyn Pictures.
The film tells the gripping story of four girls who, while attempting to retrieve stolen money from an abandoned factory, find themselves locked inside and hunted. The secrets that bind them together soon become the very force that threatens to tear them apart.
With much of the film shot in Carmarthen, Scopophobia not only showcases the region’s unique atmosphere but also its homegrown talent. It features a largely local cast and crew, including UWTSD’s very own graduate, Katrina Seaton as Assistant Director, who studied BA Filmmaking on our Carmarthen campus, graduating in 2022.
Katrina said: “While completing the final year of my BA Filmmaking degree at UWTSD, I was lucky enough to work on Scopophobia with some incredible filmmakers and Carmarthenshire/South Wales-based talent. My time at UWTSD provided me with a solid foundation for developing my practical abilities, which I was able to apply during the Scopophobia shoot, as well as the connections that enabled me to pursue this opportunity.”
Dr. Brett Aggersberg, Programme Manager for BA Digital Media Production and committee member of the Carmarthen Film Club, praised the event, stating: “This screening is a fantastic celebration of the local talent contributing to the film industry. As the Welsh premiere, it is a unique opportunity for the film club and local community to watch the film first, with the people that made it. It’s rewarding that one of our graduates was Assistant Director on this production, demonstrating the University’s contribution to the film industry.”
As the film’s director and writer, Aled Owen expressed his excitement for the premiere and said: “We began production on our first feature film Scopophobia in March 2022. We used this footage to raise the funds for two more shoots in October 2022 and March 2023, in order to complete the film.” Aled will be present at the premiere to introduce the film and share insights into its creation.
Following the screening, attendees are invited to a live performance of the film’s haunting soundtrack at Cwrw on King Street, Carmarthen, offering an immersive continuation of the evening’s experience.
Tickets for the premiere are available now on the Theatrau Sir Gar website.
