The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has celebrated the achievements of its degree apprentices at the End of Year Showcase.

The event, which brought together industry partners as well as academic staff highlighted  the growing impact of UWTSD’s apprenticeship provision across Wales.

Held at the university’s SA1 Waterfront campus, the showcase enabled apprentices from a range of sectors, including engineering, manufacturing, digital technologies and data analytics, to present projects developed through their work-based learning programmes.

The event also celebrated the continued success of UWTSD’s Degree Apprenticeship Unit, which has supported hundreds of learners in combining higher education with professional employment, helping individuals progress into leadership, technical specialist and management roles while delivering measurable impact for their employers.

As part of the showcase, attendees heard from several former and current degree apprentices whose careers have been transformed through their studies.

Among the speakers was Joseph Tobin, a fourth-generation steelworker at Tata Steel UK, who has spoken about how engineering and higher-level learning has helped him continue his family’s connection with the steel industry while developing his own career.

Lowrie Proctor also shared her experience of progressing from an analyst to a senior manager after completing a UWTSD apprenticeship in data and analytics, highlighting how the qualification accelerated both her technical expertise and leadership opportunities.

Another featured speaker, Rhys Davies, described how completing a BEng in Material Science while working full-time at Tata Steel enabled him to progress into a specialist Product Quality Control role. His studies supported the development of technical systems still benefiting the business today, while also opening further career development opportunities within the company.

The showcase also recognised the achievements of Samuel Jackson, whose degree apprenticeship journey helped him progress into digital transformation leadership roles, and Karen Windsor, who secured her dream role in computing after returning to education through apprenticeship learning.

Matthew Wicker, Head of UWTSD’s Apprenticeship Unit said: “The event showcased not only the academic achievements of apprentices but also the value degree apprenticeships continue to bring to employers across Wales through innovation, workforce development, and retention of highly skilled talent.

“The Degree Apprenticeship Unit continues to work closely with employers across sectors to provide flexible, industry-focused programmes designed to meet evolving workforce needs while enabling learners to study alongside employment.”
