Paul Pritchard’s research, conducted in partnership with Transport for Wales (TfW) and Edinburgh-based Denova, has been instrumental in the design and implementation of a Virtual Reality (VR) training programme for Train Managers. This innovative initiative tackles one of the industry’s most significant training challenges: preparing staff for infrequent yet high-risk scenarios, such as degraded operations and emergency situations, that are difficult to replicate in traditional classroom or live environments.

By harnessing immersive VR simulations, the project enables Train Managers to practice safety-critical tasks in a risk-free environment, boosting both confidence and competence. Early results demonstrate up to 90% knowledge retention for practical applications, far exceeding the rates achieved through conventional learning methods. Paul said:

“This project is a prime example of how applied research can make a tangible difference to industry practice. By bridging the gap between theory and reality, we’re helping to create a safer, more confident, and highly skilled workforce for the future of rail.”

The VR programme has already been successfully piloted with TfW’s new Train Managers and is set to expand across different traction types, station teams, and even wider cross-industry collaborations. In addition to transforming training outcomes, the project supports TfW’s broader mission to modernise rail services and set new standards for safety and efficiency across the sector.

Dr Laura James, Senior Lecturer and Programme Manager for DProf at UWTSD, added:

“Paul’s recognition through these award nominations is a testament to the transformative potential of professional practice-based research. The DProf programme is designed to support experienced professionals in exploring complex challenges within their own contexts, and Paul’s work exemplifies this beautifully. His research not only demonstrates academic excellence, but also delivers real-world impact, bridging theory and practice in a way that’s deeply relevant and inspiring. At the heart of the DProf is a commitment to practitioner-led inquiry, and Paul’s success shows just how powerful that approach can be when combined with curiosity, rigour, and a drive to make a difference.”

The winners of the Spotlight Rail Awards Cymru 2025 will be announced later this year, celebrating the people and projects driving innovation and excellence in the rail sector.
