Swansea College of Art at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) will host Tempo, Tempo!, a major exhibition developed in partnership with internationally renowned arts organisation Artangel, from October 22 to December 12, 2026.

The exhibition at the University’s Stiwdio Griffith in Swansea, brings together 1395 Days Without Red, the acclaimed collaborative film project by artists Šejla Kamerić and Anri Sala, alongside a new site-responsive performance by London-based artist and composer Raheel Khan.

The project has been developed over the past three years by UWTSD Fine Art lecturer Alexander Duncan in collaboration with The Artangel Collection curator, Persilia Caton and the Goldsmiths MFA Curating + The Artangel Collection Curatorial Placement emerging curators Jennifer Irving and Fiona Xintong Ye.

The exhibition centres on the two distinct versions of 1395 Days Without Red, created from the same footage and sharing a title, yet differing in their editing, sound, and narrative rhythm. Presented together for the first time since their 2012 premiere, the films explore life during the Siege of Sarajevo. Lasting from 1992 to 1996 during the Bosnian War, it is considered the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare.

The films explore how the conflict haunts the people of Sarajevo today. A journey into the past through the present, the films follow one woman as she navigates her daily path through present-day Sarajevo, while retracing the route once known as ‘Sniper Alley’. By making two films from the same material, Kamerić and Sala explore collective memory, agency, and survival in ways that refuse a single, authoritative narrative.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new version of Raheel Khan’s performance 0, created in response to the films. Performed by local brass musicians in the University’s Reading Room, the work transforms breath, vibration and tone into an experience shaped by the architecture and acoustics of the space.

Alexander Duncan, Lecturer in BA Fine Art and MA Contemporary Dialogues at UWTSD, said: “It has been a privilege to work with Artangel on bringing this significant project to Swansea.

“Tempo, Tempo! creates a rare opportunity for audiences to experience these remarkable films together while engaging with a new live performance that responds directly to their themes. The exhibition opens up important conversations around memory, collaboration, time, and the way  art can help us reflect on both individual and collective experience.”

Caroline Thraves, Academic Director, Art and Media at UWTSD, added: “We are delighted to welcome this ambitious exhibition to Swansea College of Art. Working with partners of Artangel’s international standing demonstrates the strength of our commitment to contemporary artistic practice and cultural exchange.

“Tempo, Tempo! offers students, staff and the wider community a unique opportunity to encounter world-class contemporary art and performance within the College’s distinctive creative spaces.”

Launch events will take place on Thursday, October 22, with Raheel Khan’s performance at 4pm in the Reading Room, followed by an opening celebration from 5pm to 7pm in Stiwdio Griffith.

Founded more than 30 years ago, Artangel is internationally recognised for commissioning and presenting ambitious contemporary art projects in unexpected locations across the UK and beyond. 1395 Days Without Red is part of The Artangel Collection, an initiative to bring outstanding film and video works, commissioned and produced by Artangel, to galleries and museums across the UK and internationally.
