Inclusive Education (Part-time) (FdA)

Carmarthen
3 Years Part-Time
To work/volunteer in educational setting 1 day per week.

The Foundation in Inclusive Education is designed for Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, and those who work or volunteer in other learning environments.

This course focuses on work-based learning, where students build on their existing skills and knowledge, gaining a higher education qualification in the process. By completing this degree, students follow a clear progression route, preparing them for further studies or career advancement. Many students go on to complete the Inclusive Education BA (Hons) top-up degree.

This programme is offered not only at the university’s campuses but also in wider community settings. This gives students the opportunity to experience real-world learning, helping them to apply what they learn in the classroom to their daily roles. The course allows students to develop their skills, knowledge, and understanding of the links between theory, policy, and practice. They can draw on their own work-based experiences, making the learning process highly relevant and personal.

Students can complete assignments and presentations in either Welsh or English, allowing for bilingual delivery and supporting those with a strong understanding of the Welsh language. The course recognises the importance of the Welsh Government’s five Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants, which include Pedagogy, Professional Learning, Innovation, Leadership, and Collaboration. These standards are embedded throughout the programme, giving students the chance to engage in professional development that will help them grow both individually and as part of a team. The aim is to develop their expertise so they can make a positive and sustainable impact on all learners.

Through this programme, students will gain transferable skills that will be valuable in a range of jobs and settings. These include reflective practice, the ability to think critically, and the capacity to collaborate and mediate with others. These skills are essential for success in the education workforce and beyond. The course encourages students to continually reflect on their own learning and development, ensuring that they are always improving and prepared for the challenges of the future.

The Foundation Degree in Inclusive Education offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable qualifications while working in the field. It supports skills development and offers a pathway to further academic achievement or career progression, all while making a real difference in the lives of learners. Whether you are looking to advance in your current role or pursue new opportunities, this programme offers a strong foundation for future success.

Apprenticeship in Paralegal, Advanced Paralegal, Lawyer (CILEX)

Swansea
2 Years (4 Semesters)

The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) is a Professional, Statutory, and Regulatory Body (PSRB) for the legal services sector. CILEX aims to transform the provision of legal services and meet the evolving needs of employers. Through the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), it offers a clear and structured route for those pursuing a career in law, with three stages designed to build legal expertise and practical skills.

The CPQ pathway begins with the CILEx Paralegal course (Level 3). This foundational stage introduces students to core areas such as Contract Law, Tort Law, and the Legal Systems, equipping learners with the essential skills to support lawyers and legal teams in various settings. The focus is on providing a strong grounding in legal principles and preparing students for the responsibilities of a paralegal role.

The next step is the CILEx Advanced Paralegal course (Level 5), which expands on this foundation by developing more advanced legal knowledge and practical skills. Key areas of focus include Dispute Resolution, Property and Conveyancing, and Criminal Law. At this stage, students will gain the ability to handle more complex legal tasks, deepening their understanding of professional standards and business awareness. Optional modules, such as Family Law or Employment Law, allow learners to tailor their studies to their interests or career goals.

The final stage is the CILEx Lawyer course (Level 6), which enables learners to specialise in a particular area of law. This stage focuses on the practical application of legal knowledge, critical thinking, and meeting high professional standards. By choosing from areas such as Criminal Litigation, Wills and Probate, or Commercial Conveyancing, learners develop the expertise needed to become fully qualified lawyers, ready to work independently and provide sound legal advice.

Throughout these courses, learners are supported with blended learning, combining online study and in-person workshops. This flexible approach allows students to balance their studies with work commitments. The CILEX qualifications are designed to be practical, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the modern legal services sector, with a focus on work-readiness, ethical responsibility, and commercial awareness.

Sinology (Humanistic Education) (BA Hons)

Swansea
3 Years Full-time
96-112 UCAS Tariff Points

The BA (Hons) in Sinology (Humanistic Education) offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich heritage of ancient China. Through this course, students engage deeply with the intellectual, social, and moral traditions that continue to shape Chinese thought and culture. Central to this programme is an exploration of how classical Chinese thinkers envisioned the development of human excellence and how these ideas remain relevant in today’s world.

This Sinology programme is taught in English and takes a broad approach, focusing on a range of topics essential to understanding Chinese civilisation and its philosophical underpinnings. The course covers essential aspects of Chinese studies, from Chinese philology and the pre-modern education system to the interpretation of Confucian classics. By studying these areas, students gain insight into the core philosophical frameworks and governing concepts that have influenced Chinese society for centuries. These studies help students appreciate the timeless wisdom of Chinese thought and its potential to inform modern ideas about personal and societal growth.

The programme follows an interdisciplinary approach, making connections across fields such as history, linguistics, literature, and philosophy. This broad foundation ensures students develop a comprehensive understanding of the social structures and ancient economic principles that shaped Chinese society, offering insights that are as applicable today as they were in ancient times. By bringing together diverse fields of study, students gain a well-rounded perspective on humanistic education and how classical Chinese thought can inspire adaptability and resilience.

As a unique feature, the course includes Mandarin Chinese lessons, enabling students to deepen their engagement with Chinese culture and history. This language skill is an added advantage for those considering future roles in an increasingly interconnected world.

The programme’s focus on accessibility, application, and real-world relevance prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates may go on to roles in education and training, government and public administration, human resources, and business administration. The skills gained from this degree also provide an excellent foundation for postgraduate study and research, particularly in areas relating to East Asia and global cultural studies.

In choosing this programme, students will undertake an intellectually enriching journey that bridges past and present, equipping them with knowledge and skills that are highly valued today. Through the study of Sinology, students become part of a legacy of humanistic learning that values cultural understanding, ethical insight, and personal growth.

Spiral assessment is further supported by the fact that all modules centre on critical engagement with canonical texts. Skills developed in earlier modules will be practised and honed in later modules.

Most modules include a practical assessment, that is a presentation in English. The aim of the presentation is to ensure continuous development of English language skills among the cohort, but also to ensure that students are being assessed in situations that are likely to resemble their later employment situation as teachers of Chinese culture.

Emergency Preparedness and Civil Protection (CertHE)

Distance Learning
2 Years Part-time
64-80 UCAS Points

The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 is an important law in the UK that focuses on how we prepare for emergencies. This Act helps with emergency preparedness planning, protection, and management. It requires different emergency services, like the police and fire services, to work together and share information effectively. It also involves non-emergency services that may play a role during a crisis.

Our Emergency Preparedness and Civil Protection (CertHE) has been created to support civil protection professionals in the UK. The aim is to help individuals gain a vocational academic qualification in their chosen profession. This course is suitable for anyone who might be involved in emergencies. Participants can come from various areas, including the public sector (such as local authorities, police, fire service, ambulance services, and health organisations), the private sector (like utility companies), or non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

One of the main goals of this programme is to develop a shared understanding of multi-agency prevention, preparation, response, and recovery arrangements. Emergencies often require a coordinated approach from different agencies. This programme is designed to help individuals and organisations understand their roles in the civil protection frameworkand to meet the obligations set out in the Civil Contingencies Act.

In developing this course, we have worked closely with professionals from emergency response teams, especially those in local authority emergency planning. These representatives have valuable insights into what skills are necessary for effective emergency management. Their expertise has been crucial in shaping the curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of learners.

Throughout the programme, students will learn about essential topics, including risk assessment, crisis communication, and the strategies that agencies use to work together during emergencies. By engaging with real-world scenarios and case studies, participants will gain practical experience that prepares them for the challenges they may face in their careers.

The Civil Protection Programme is not just about learning facts; it is about developing skills that are vital for making a difference in emergencies. Students will be encouraged to think critically and work collaboratively, reflecting the real-life situations they will encounter in their roles.

Upon completing this programme, participants will have a strong foundation in civil protection principles and practices. This knowledge will prepare them for various roles within emergency management. Whether they aim to work in local government, health services, or private companies, this qualification will enhance their career opportunities and enable them to contribute positively to society.
