The programme supports a wide range of interests, from modern and contemporary literature research to literary theory and analysis.

Throughout their studies, students receive research skills training and supervision, ensuring they develop the expertise needed to conduct high-level research. They also have opportunities to attend postgraduate research seminars, where they can share ideas and discuss their work with peers and experts in the field.

For those interested in teaching, the programme may provide teaching opportunities for doctoral students, allowing them to gain practical experience alongside their studies. This is particularly valuable for those seeking professional development for language educators.

This doctorate is ideal for professionals looking to advance their careers in education, linguistics, or literature. Distance Learning
8 Years Part-time

The Professional Doctorate in English Language Education is designed for English language professionals who want to deepen their expertise and contribute to new knowledge in their field. This programme leads to a research qualification at doctoral level, combining structured learning with advanced research in English language education.

This taught doctorate with research component includes six specialist modules before students begin their independent research. These modules cover key topics such as English language education research, applied linguistics research, second language acquisition studies, and psycholinguistics in language learning. Students also explore language learner psychology, language teacher psychology, discourse analysis in education, and sociolinguistics in language teaching.

After completing the taught modules, students undertake an independent research project in English literature and linguistics. This project allows them to make an original contribution to knowledge in areas such as research in English literature, interdisciplinary literary studies, critical and cultural theory in literature, and comparative literature and translation studies.

Whether your goal is to influence teaching practices, contribute to academic research, or enhance your professional expertise, this programme provides the knowledge and support needed to succeed.

Heritage is constantly evolving, shaped by historical legacies, contemporary needs, and future possibilities. This programme explores the role of heritage organisations, including museums and archives, in preserving and interpreting heritage in ways that are meaningful and sustainable. It also examines the growing impact of digital heritage, from virtual reconstructions of lost sites to the use of augmented reality in visitor experiences.

The course is structured to support both independent and collaborative research, providing students with the skills to lead in the heritage sector. Research undertaken in this doctorate is expected to make a significant contribution to knowledge, addressing areas such as heritage sustainability, conservation strategies, and the role of heritage in society. Students will engage with critical debates on policy, management, and the ethical responsibilities of working with heritage.

This doctorate is flexible in its delivery, making it accessible for professionals who need to balance study with employment. The option for distance learning in heritage allows students to undertake their research from anywhere in the world while benefiting from expert supervision and a supportive academic community.

Graduates of this programme will be well-positioned for leadership roles in heritage practice, policy, and academia. Whether working with heritage institutions, engaging in public history, or influencing conservation efforts, this course equips students with the expertise to shape the future of cultural heritage.
