Likewise, self-reflexivity as a professional attitude that is expected of each graduate of this programme will be embedded and practiced though specific assignments in all modules.

Typical assessment formats include essays, oral presentations, critical reviews, teaching demos, and other short written assignments.

Module assessment is designed to prepare students for the task of submitting an MA dissertation in Part 2. Some modules therefore use a standard assessment pattern consisting of one or two longer essays and a presentation. In some modules, however, student progress is assessed by using the portfolio format. The portfolio offers greater flexibility in the assessment of professionally focused skills, both collaborative and personalised, than the standard essay/presentation format.

The MPhil is internationally recognised and highly regarded by employers and research institutions.

At our university, you’ll join a vibrant research community and work with a supervision team chosen for their knowledge of your subject. Your work will lead to the submission of a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination). There is also the option to undertake practice-based research, where your written work is complemented by a substantial creative or practical output.

Our MPhil programmes are available in a range of subject areas aligned with our academic strengths, including Art and Media, Business, Finance and Management, and Computing. Depending on your discipline, study is available either in person or online, with some offering pathways to suit full-time or part-time students.

Choosing to pursue an MPhil is a significant step. It allows you to immerse yourself in a subject you’re passionate about, while developing skills and experience that can shape your future - whether in academia, industry, or the creative professions.

Why choose this course?

01
Live projects: You will work on real briefs with real communities. This makes your work more relevant, and gives you the chance to make a difference while you study.
02
Collaborative learning: Our studio is a shared space where ideas are exchanged every day. You’ll learn from your tutors, your classmates, and the wider university community.
03
Critical design: We focus on ideas as well as buildings. You’ll explore ethics, politics, and people as part of your design process.

What you will learn

Our Philosophy

We believe in learning through making, critical thinking, and collaboration. You will be encouraged to think for yourself, challenge the norm, and design in ways that are creative, meaningful, and responsible.

Year One

You’ll begin by exploring ideas and values that shape architecture today. Studio projects will help you think about real places and people. You’ll learn how to do research, develop your own design approach, and think about how design connects to culture, ethics, and the environment.

Year Two

In your final year, you’ll take on a large, personal design project. You will work with others to test ideas, and produce a major piece of work that shows who you are as a designer. You’ll also reflect on your design thinking, get ready for working life, and build your skills in communication and critical reflection.

Master Of Architecture (Part-time) (MArch)

Swansea
3 Years Part-time
2:2 honours degree

Design With Purpose and Shape What Comes Next.
Architecture shapes how we live - how we connect, how we thrive, and how we respond to the world’s biggest challenges. Our MArch invites you to push your thinking further, exploring how thoughtful design can improve lives, strengthen communities, and create a more equitable, sustainable future.

On this course, you will investigate the impact of architecture on people, places and the planet. You will experiment, challenge assumptions, and use your creativity to address urgent issues like climate resilience, social justice, and spatial wellbeing. This is a programme for those who believe design can make a real and lasting difference.

Take Your Design Ambitions Further
Building on your undergraduate experience, the MArch helps you refine your practice, deepen your critical thinking, and shape your own architectural identity.  Exploring what kind of architect you want to become — developing a clear design voice, strong values, and a forward-looking understanding of the profession.

A Studio Environment That Mirrors Practice
Learning happens through immersive studio culture, just as it does in leading architecture practices. You will work on ambitious design projects, tackle live briefs, and collaborate with communities and partners beyond the discipline. Learning through making, prototyping, testing, and reflecting — developing the confidence and skillset needed for contemporary practice.

Design as a Tool for Change
This course suits those who care about community, environmental responsibility, and the social role of architecture. We champion design that matters - thoughtful, contextual, and rooted in collaboration. If you are driven by the idea of using architecture as an agent for positive change, you will find your place here.

A Complete Architectural Pathway
We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate routes within the same institution, giving you a clear pathway toward professional qualification as an architect. You can choose to study full-time or part-time, allowing you to shape your studies around your life and ambitions.

Young People, Communities and Youth Work: Post Qualifying Route (MA)

Carmarthen
18 months Full-time
2:2 honours degree

The Young People, Communities and Youth Work Post Qualifying route caters to practitioners who already hold a professional qualification in Youth Work. This advanced pathway is tailored for experienced professionals seeking to deepen their understanding and expertise in Youth Work at a postgraduate level, offering more specialised and in-depth study opportunities.

The programmes aim to develop students into thoughtful, effective, and knowledgeable professionals in youth and community work. The curriculum is designed to encourage students to become more independent, helping them to identify their own learning and development goals. With an emphasis on leadership in youth work, students will learn to balance practical skills with critical thinking, preparing them for a range of youth worker career paths in community and youth settings.

The course takes a social science approach to examine some of the most urgent challenges affecting young people today, from trauma and adverse childhood experiences to substance misuse and issues related to County Lines. Students will also explore topics such as children’s rights, health and well-being, and the impact of relationships on young people’s lives. This understanding of contemporary social issues enables students to take on community development roles, with a commitment to safeguarding and ethics.

Central to the course are youth work placements that allow students to put theory into practice. These placements are a crucial part of their training, offering hands-on experience in real-world settings that strengthen their research skills in youth services and build a practical understanding of project management and bid writing in youth services. Through these experiences, students learn to apply theory, policy, and practice in an integrated way, helping them become confident, capable, and empathetic youth workers.

These programmes are offered as full-time study options and encourage students to engage deeply with the work of supporting young people, developing their skills in a collaborative and professional environment. The goal is for graduates to leave with the skills, insight, and practical knowledge to lead in their field and contribute positively to the lives of young people. With a strong foundation in leadership, safeguarding, and ethical practice, these programmes are designed for those who are committed to making a difference through their work in youth and community services.
