Interfaith Studies (Full-time) (ProfDoc)

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
2:2 Honours Degree

This MA in Ancient Religions offers a unique, multidisciplinary programme that explores the diverse religious traditions of the ancient world. The course goes beyond the familiar realms of Greece and Rome to include ancient civilisations as far-reaching as Ancient Egypt, Celtic Britain, and Ancient China. By undertaking a comparative analysis of religious traditions, you will study how different cultures practised religion and engaged with the divine.

You will explore the earliest temples in Southwest Asia, delve into the religions of the Bronze Age Mediterranean, and examine the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt. This programme will also take you across the sacred landscapes of northwest Europe, where you can uncover how ancient peoples interacted with their surroundings.

Through the study of ancient religions, you will encounter a range of key topics, such as organised religious practices, the myths of ancient Greece and Rome, and concepts like cosmology, magic, and divination in the classical world. You will also have the chance to engage with Old Testament texts, exploring their cultural and religious significance. This programme places emphasis on the importance of literary analysis and historical analysis, encouraging you to think critically about the religious, cultural, and political issues that shaped the ancient world.

The course offers flexibility, allowing you to tailor your studies according to your research interests. Modules are designed to cater to a wide variety of themes, from ancient philosophy and classical texts to political and cultural issues in the ancient world. You will also have the chance to engage with Greek and Roman philosophy, biblical studies, and even study ancient languages like New Testament Greek and Biblical Hebrew.

Whether you are interested in the ethical issues surrounding ancient religions or how different cultures viewed death and religion, this programme offers a comprehensive insight into the rich and varied beliefs of the ancient world. It is particularly suitable for those looking to further their academic journey, or to gain an in-depth understanding of the ancient world’s diverse and complex religious traditions.

Through your studies, you will engage with the political, cultural, and ethical issues that continue to influence religious thought today. By exploring these ancient civilisations, you will gain a deeper understanding of how religion shaped, and was shaped by, the ancient world.

What you will learn

The Ancient Religions (MA) offers students whose interests centre on this field the opportunity to take a specialist higher degree tailored to investigating evidence for religious practices and beliefs in diverse cultural contexts: Neolithic southwest Asia, Bronze Age Mediterranean, Celtic, Egyptian, Jewish, Graeco-Roman, and ancient China.

Year 1 –

In the first year, you will be introduced to a wide range of ancient religions from different cultural contexts, including Neolithic southwest Asia, the Bronze Age Mediterranean, and ancient Egypt. Through archaeology, anthropology, and textual analysis, you will explore the interconnections between religion and society, examining key religious practices and beliefs. You will also engage with Celtic, Jewish, and Graeco-Roman traditions, gaining a deeper understanding of how cultural, political, and social forces shaped religious thought across different civilisations. This year provides a solid foundation for advanced comparative religious analysis.

Year 2 -

In the second year, you will concentrate on an independent research project, culminating in a dissertation. You will select a specific topic related to ancient religions in close consultation with a member of staff. This will provide an opportunity to apply your knowledge of methodologies, theories, and primary sources to address complex issues. You will develop the ability to construct a well-researched argument, engage critically with modern scholarship, and present your findings professionally. For language-focused students, there is the option to produce a lemmatic commentary on Greek or Latin texts.

    Visa and funding requirements

If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.

For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.

International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

  • The programmes assessment strategy consists of formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments aim to use the form of ‘spiral assessment’, encouraging students to revisit and implement standards that have been covered in previous modules. Likewise, self-reflexivity as a professional attitude that is expected of each graduate of this programme will be embedded and practiced though specific assignments in all modules.

Typical assessment formats include essays, oral presentations, critical reviews, teaching demos, and other short written assignments.

Module assessment is designed to prepare students for the task of submitting an MA dissertation in Part 2. Some modules therefore use a standard assessment pattern consisting of one or two longer essays and a presentation. In some modules, however, student progress is assessed by using the portfolio format. The portfolio offers greater flexibility in the assessment of professionally focused skills, both collaborative and personalised, than the standard essay/presentation format.

At our university, you’ll join a vibrant research community and work with a supervision team chosen for their knowledge of your subject. Your work will lead to the submission of a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination). There is also the option to undertake practice-based research, where your written work is complemented by a substantial creative or practical output.

Our MPhil programmes are available in a range of subject areas aligned with our academic strengths, including Art and Media, Business, Finance and Management, and Computing. Depending on your discipline, study is available either in person or online, with some offering pathways to suit full-time or part-time students.

Master Of Architecture (Full-time) (MArch)

Swansea
2 Years Full-time
2:2 honours degree

Design With Purpose and Shape What Comes Next.
Architecture shapes how we live - how we connect, how we thrive, and how we respond to the world’s biggest challenges. Our MArch invites you to push your thinking further, exploring how thoughtful design can improve lives, strengthen communities, and create a more equitable, sustainable future.

On this course, you will investigate the impact of architecture on people, places and the planet. You will experiment, challenge assumptions, and use your creativity to address urgent issues like climate resilience, social justice, and spatial wellbeing. This is a programme for those who believe design can make a real and lasting difference.

Take Your Design Ambitions Further
Building on your undergraduate experience, the MArch helps you refine your practice, deepen your critical thinking, and shape your own architectural identity.  Exploring what kind of architect you want to become — developing a clear design voice, strong values, and a forward-looking understanding of the profession.

A Studio Environment That Mirrors Practice
Learning happens through immersive studio culture, just as it does in leading architecture practices. You will work on ambitious design projects, tackle live briefs, and collaborate with communities and partners beyond the discipline. Learning through making, prototyping, testing, and reflecting — developing the confidence and skillset needed for contemporary practice.

Design as a Tool for Change
This course suits those who care about community, environmental responsibility, and the social role of architecture. We champion design that matters - thoughtful, contextual, and rooted in collaboration. If you are driven by the idea of using architecture as an agent for positive change, you will find your place here.

A Complete Architectural Pathway
We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate routes within the same institution, giving you a clear pathway toward professional qualification as an architect. You can choose to study full-time or part-time, allowing you to shape your studies around your life and ambitions.

Why choose this course?

01
Live projects: You will work on real briefs with real communities. This makes your work more relevant, and gives you the chance to make a difference while you study.
02
Collaborative learning: Our studio is a shared space where ideas are exchanged every day. You’ll learn from your tutors, your classmates, and the wider university community.
03
Critical design: We focus on ideas as well as buildings. You’ll explore ethics, politics, and people as part of your design process.

What you will learn

Our Philosophy

We believe in learning through making, critical thinking, and collaboration. You will be encouraged to think for yourself, challenge the norm, and design in ways that are creative, meaningful, and responsible.

Year One

You’ll begin by exploring ideas and values that shape architecture today. Studio projects will help you think about real places and people. You’ll learn how to do research, develop your own design approach, and think about how design connects to culture, ethics, and the environment.

Year Two

In your final year, you’ll take on a large, personal design project. You will work with others to test ideas, and produce a major piece of work that shows who you are as a designer. You’ll also reflect on your design thinking, get ready for working life, and build your skills in communication and critical reflection.
