Background

Dr Besty Jose is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care with a specialism in digital health and a PhD in the field. She currently serves as Programme Manager for the Certificate in Higher Education Skills for the Workplace (Health and Social Care). Her academic interests centre on teaching and learning in higher education, with particular emphasis on student success, belonging, and inclusive pedagogical practices. She has developed particular expertise in improving the experiences and outcomes of widening participation and foundation students, embedding strategies that promote engagement, confidence, and academic progression.  Dr Jose’s research focuses on digital health education and skills development, exploring how digital literacy and capability can be enhanced among health and social care students and practitioners. She is particularly interested in how digital competencies can support workforce readiness, professional identity, and effective engagement with evolving technologies.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Dr Jose’s PhD focused on how older people use technology, which developed her interest in digital inclusion and how technology can support people’s health and wellbeing. She has worked in a range of roles across social care, clinical research, and teaching. Currently, she co-leads several programmes that focus on helping students feel they belong in HE and can succeed. Dr Jose has conducted research to evaluate these programmes and understand what helps students engage, gain confidence, and progress.

Her research also focuses on digital health education and skills development. She is particularly interested in how health and social care students and professionals learn. This includes exploring how digital skills support readiness for the workplace in a changing health and care environment.

From 2022 to 2024, Dr Jose was a LEAP Fellow (Learning, Enhancement and Advancement Programme) at UWTSD. This role supported her work on inclusive teaching practices, student engagement, and student success.
