Background

Dr Gregory Owen has over 25 years of experience in education, spanning secondary, further and higher education. He holds a Master’s degree in Physics and completed a PhD in Nanotechnology focused on gas sensing applications. Alongside his academic career, Gregory has contributed nationally as the Welsh Representative for the Engineering Professors Council, supporting the advancement of engineering education and policy. His teaching and research interests centre on innovative approaches to teaching and learning, drawing on his breadth of sector experience to enrich the student experience. In addition, he has served as an examiner for AQA, providing insight into assessment and curriculum design. Dr Owen’s extensive expertise across education and his commitment to innovation help shape his contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, ensuring that his practice reflects both academic rigour and current sector needs.

Dr Gregory Owen has a broad background across education and research, with over 25 years’ experience spanning secondary, further and higher education. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has held a range of leadership roles, including management in secondary schools, further education and Principal Lecturer for Teaching and Learning, before being appointed Academic Director in 2019 which he holds to this day. Alongside his educational leadership, Gregory has an active research profile, with 17 published papers in the field of surface science. His work reflects a balance of academic expertise and practical application, combining a commitment to research excellence with a focus on advancing teaching and learning. This integrated approach continues to shape his contributions to curriculum development, academic strategy, and student experience across the university.
