Background

Dr Huw Griffiths brings over thirty years of professional and teaching experience in education and curriculum development. He spent more than two decades as a teacher and administrator in Welsh-medium secondary schools before moving into regional consortia and local authority roles, focusing on curricula, classroom practice, and pedagogy. He gained a BA in Humanities and a PGCE from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, an MA in Welsh History from Aberystwyth, and completed his PhD in Welsh History at Cardiff while working as a full-time teacher.

At UWTSD, Huw lectures mainly on the Master’s in Education programme, contributes to undergraduate modules in History and Education at Carmarthen, and teaches on the PGCE in Swansea. He has also advised the Welsh Government on panels for education, history, and the Welsh language. His wide-ranging experience across schools, academia, and policy enriches his teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Dr Huw Griffiths has extensive professional and research experience in education, literacy, and Welsh history. He has published and presented widely at national and international conferences, with a particular focus on Cynefin and its role in education and identity. He has advised the Welsh Assembly Government on education policy, the Welsh language, and Welsh history.

At UWTSD, Huw leads research on developing literacy and reading in Welsh secondary schools, working closely with schools and educational organisations to strengthen pedagogy and practice. He is also preparing a book based on his PhD on the Welsh who fought in the American Civil War, offering new insights into Wales’s transatlantic connections. His work bridges professional practice, academic research, and policy, ensuring his teaching and scholarship remain firmly rooted in the realities of Welsh education and culture.
