On 9 March, Carmarthen Film Club will present a special evening at the Lyric Theatre of short documentaries created by independent filmmakers from across Wales. Delivered in partnership with Screen Alliance Wales and Carmarthen Bay Film Festival, the event will showcase compelling stories followed by a live Q&A with filmmakers.

The evening is being organised and hosted by Dr Brett Aggersberg, Programme Manager for BA (Hons) Adventure Filmmaking at UWTSD, based on the Carmarthen campus, reinforcing the University’s commitment to connecting students with industry and community.

The screenings will celebrate emerging talent in Welsh documentary filmmaking, featuring stories that span communities and causes; from Cardiff’s Butetown to Gower-based ocean accessibility charity Surfability, as well as the work of a radio host and digital content creator.

For students, aspiring filmmakers and the wider community, the event offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from industry professionals about how stories move from idea to screen, and to learn more about pathways into the creative industries.

Dr Aggersberg said:

“Documentary film plays a vital role in amplifying underrepresented voices, challenging perspectives, and capturing the lived experiences of communities whose stories might otherwise go unheard. Events such as this not only celebrate the craft of non-fiction storytelling but also create meaningful dialogue between filmmakers and audiences.

“At UWTSD, we are deeply committed to nurturing emerging talent and creating opportunities where new voices can develop, experiment and be heard. Supporting initiatives like this reflects our belief that documentary filmmaking is not only an art form, but a catalyst for social awareness, cultural understanding and positive change.”

The collaboration also highlights the strong relationship between UWTSD and the Welsh screen sector. Screen Alliance Wales works closely with broadcasters, production companies and education providers to develop local crew, support emerging talent and create employment pathways into major productions,  aligning with the University’s focus on industry-ready learning and real-world experience.

The event is free to attend and open to the public, with tickets available in advance or at the door.

Tickets can be booked via the Theatrau Sir Gâr website.
