Alex Owens, a Level 6 student on the BA Creative Music Technology programme at UWTSD, organised an inspiring evening featuring celebrated songwriters Mal Pope and Steve Balsamo, with support from rising star Brook Fox.

Three musicians on a stage bathed in a purple light surrounded by the audience.

This unique event, which took place on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Elysium Gallery in Swansea, was part of Alex’s final year Independent Project Module and offered a rich blend of live performances, personal reflections, and behind-the-scenes insights into the world of song writing.

The evening featured live acoustic sets by Mal Pope, who is also a Professor of Practice at the University and Steve Balsamo, an Honorary Fellow, interspersed with in-depth discussions on their creative processes, experiences in the music industry, and approaches to song writing. It provided an opportunity to witness the interplay of music and storytelling in an intimate setting, gaining a rare glimpse into the minds of two renowned artists.

The event also marked the launch of Alex’s innovative new project, “Sessions,” a brand that blends live performances with digital content to engage audiences in a fresh, interactive way. Through research, interviews, and real-time events, Alex aims to build a sustainable model for future creative initiatives.

Alex Owens said: “As a Creative Music Technology student, this event was the culmination of my exploration into live performance, digital media, and audience engagement. I’m thrilled to be showcasing the talent of Mal Pope and Steve Balsamo while launching the Sessions brand as part of my final-year project.”

UWTSD’s Creative Music Technology degree is designed to equip students with the artistic, technical, creative, and professional skills needed for a career in the music industries. This degree is highly practical and industry-focused, offering a multi-skilled approach that includes composition, analysis, recording, and production.

All proceeds from ticket sales were donated to independent arts organisation Elysium.  Scott Mackay, Events Manager at Elysium said: “We were delighted to work with Alex after he had excelled working here as a sound engineer, and he put together a truly incredible evening of entertainment featuring some of Swansea’s premier acts.  The night was a huge success, and we can’t wait to see what he does next!”
