Dyffryn Nantlle student races towards a bright future in motorsport engineering
A lifelong passion for cars, maths and motorsport has led Aron Evans to academic success as he has graduated in Motorsport Engineering from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD),
Originally from Dyffryn Nantlle in Gwynedd, Aron received his education through the medium of Welsh at Ysgol Bro Lleu and Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle. Continuing to study in Wales was a priority for him, and he says that his decision to choose UWTSD began years earlier during a visit to the Eisteddfod. He says:
“I remember being mesmerised by the racing car that was on the University stand and deciding at that point that this was where I wanted to study when I was older. Combining that memory with the opportunity to study in Wales and the reputation of the Motorsport Engineering course, the decision was an easy one.”
Aron chose the course to combine his favourite subjects at school, maths and physics, with his keen interest in cars and racing. During his studies, he developed a deeper understanding of the industry and discovered that data and aerodynamics are the areas that appeal to him the most.
One of the highlights of his time at the university was being a member of the MCR racing team, travelling to famous circuits such as Silverstone and Donington Park to compete in the Sports 2000 Championship. He added:
“That was an amazing experience and an eye-opener to all the work that goes on behind the scenes before and during a race weekend. I learned so much about teamwork, problem-solving and operating in a high-performance environment.”
In addition to his studies, Aron was an ambassador for the University, an experience that gave him new opportunities to develop his confidence, expand his network and gain experiences that he would not have had otherwise.
Like many students, Aron faced challenges in managing the academic workload. By learning to break large tasks down into smaller steps and plan his time effectively, he was able to develop organisational skills that will be valuable in his future career.
He commends the support he received from his lecturers throughout his time at UWTSD.
“The support has been amazing from start to finish. It was always easy to turn to the lecturers for advice, and during the final year I received support which encouraged me to develop independently when completing more challenging work.”
Tim Tudor, Programme Manager Motorsport Engineering at UWTSD said:
“Aron has been a committed and enthusiastic member of the Motorsport Engineering programme at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. His final-year project demonstrated strong technical ability, using computational fluid dynamics to investigate the DrivAer vehicle and develop a motorsport-focused aerodynamic package.
“Alongside his academic work, Aron made a valuable contribution to the MCR Sports 2000 student race team over several years. His involvement in data acquisition, performance analysis and race vehicle preparation allowed him to apply his engineering knowledge in a demanding practical environment. Aron’s technical skills, teamwork and dedication have prepared him well for a successful career in the motorsport and automotive industries, and I look forward to seeing what he achieves in the future.”
Aron encourages anyone interested in motorsport engineering to consider the course.
“The course offers a great combination of theory and practical experience. The facilities are excellent, the lecturers are very supportive, and the campus is a great place to study. I would encourage anyone considering the course to visit an open day.”
Aron feels that his time at the university has prepared him well for the future, giving him more confidence in his ability to make decisions and work independently.
Rather than saying goodbye to UWTSD, Aron intends to continue his academic journey by studying for a Master’s degree at the University.
“While there are other options available, I feel so at home here in Swansea that I don’t see a reason to leave. I’m looking forward to developing my knowledge further and building on the great experiences I’ve had so far.”
