Degree Apprentices from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) were given an extraordinary opportunity to experience world-class explosives engineering in action during a visit to Alford Technologies’ Broadmead Range in Somerset earlier this week.

Hosted by Alford’s highly skilled team, the visit delivered an exceptional day of hands-on learning and technical insight, showcasing the very best in professional practice, innovation, and safety standards within the explosives engineering industry. The experience has been hailed as invaluable for apprentices working toward their degrees in Explosives Engineering.

Alford Technologies is a globally recognised leader in explosives engineering solutions and training, known for its expertise in energetic materials, cutting-edge innovation, and commitment to operational safety. Its facilities provide an unparalleled environment for professional development, giving learners access to realistic and highly controlled demonstrations that complement their academic study.

During the visit, Year 2 apprentices, currently studying Principles of Explosives Engineering and Principles of Systems Engineering, gained vital practical experience in the controlled destruction of damaged infrastructure and the disposal of unexploded ordnance (UXO) without detonation. The insights gained will directly reinforce their academic understanding and strengthen their technical and professional development.

“The visit to Alford’s Range was exceptionally well delivered and demonstrated the highest levels of professionalism and expertise,” said Matthew Wicker, Head of UWTSD’s Apprenticeship Unit. “Our apprentices were inspired by the precision and innovation on display and left with a deeper appreciation of how their studies translate into real-world applications.”

UWTSD extended special thanks to Gareth Collett, CBE,  for his expert organisation and leadership, and to the entire team at Alford Technologies for their time, commitment, and dedication to providing such a memorable and educational experience.

“Partnerships like this are vital to shaping the next generation of explosives engineers,” added Matthew. “We are deeply grateful to Alford Technologies for supporting our apprentices’ development and for helping to bridge the gap between theory and professional practice.”
