Dafydd Wilson has been awarded Silver in Graphic Design under the theme of Equality + Accessibility. His beautifully considered project explores the experiences of cochlear processor users, reflecting thoughtfully on the transitions between wearing and removing them. Dafydd, who is now progressing to a master’s in graphic design at UWTSD, has demonstrated outstanding creativity, resilience, and a deep commitment to design with purpose. This award is a fitting recognition of his talent and dedication.

Dafydd Wilson said: “Experiencing the world as a cochlear-implanted Deaf Designer, I began to wonder how my view of the world would change without my processors. What would I notice without sound? Does my interpretation change with sound?

“This book is an artistic representation of how I experience the world, specifically explored through the concept of ‘On’ and ‘Off.’ It aims to demonstrate that disability is not a barrier to creativity.”

Svitlana Ulianych has also been awarded Silver in Graphic Design, under the theme of War and Crisis. Despite being only in her second year, Svitlana has already established herself as a sought-after designer within the industry. Her award-winning project, developed as part of the Empathy in Design module, is filled with meaning and emotion, inspiring both understanding and gratitude. Arriving in the UK from Ukraine, her courage and passion shine through in every aspect of her work.

Svitlana Ulianych said: ““The Ukrainian Primer is a visual book exploring lived experiences between Ukrainian refugees and British hosts in Swansea. Based on real stories and local research, it presents 33 spreads. A red thread weaves through the book and the final outcome is a completed conceptual book reflecting empathy beyond language.”

Donna Williams, Programme Manager for BA (Hons) Graphic Design, said: “We are incredibly proud of Dafydd and Svitlana for their success at the Creative Conscience Awards. Their work demonstrates the power of design to challenge perceptions, foster empathy, and bring about positive change. Both have shown not only exceptional design skill, but also courage, passion, and a deep care for others. These awards are a testament to their talent, resilience, and commitment to meaningful creativity.”

Caroline Thraves, Academic Director of Art & Media, said: “These awards highlight the exceptional talent and social awareness of our students. Both Dafydd and Svitlana have used design as a tool for storytelling and connection, addressing deeply personal and global issues with sensitivity and creativity. Their success at Creative Conscience is a reflection not only of their hard work, but also of the values we nurture within our art and media community—where creativity becomes a catalyst for empathy and change.”
