High-Quality Primary Education Course Draws Student to UWTSD Carmarthen
Karly Harris, from Pontypridd, celebrated her graduation this week after successfully completing the BA Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) Carmarthen campus.
A former pupil of Ysgol Garth Olwg, Karly chose to study at Carmarthen following recommendations about the University’s highly regarded Primary Education programme, as well as being attracted by the campus’ supportive environment and picturesque surroundings.
Having aspired to be a teacher from a young age, Karly said the course had reinforced her passion for the profession.
“I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was little, and the BA Primary Education course has really made me realise that this is what I want to do, thanks to the wonderful lecturers who have supported me throughout the three years,” she said.
During her studies, Karly aimed to develop both her teaching skills and personal confidence.
“My main ambitions while studying the course were to become the best teacher I could be, while also increasing my confidence, both of which I feel I have achieved,” she said.
Reflecting on her time at UWTSD, Karly highlighted the support of academic staff, the friendships she formed, and the wide range of opportunities available through the course, including studying a module through the medium of Welsh medium to grow her confidence in the language.
“One of the biggest highlights has been the lecturers and the amazing friends I have made. Without these people, I don’t think I would have achieved what I have today. The opportunities provided by the course have been invaluable and have contributed significantly to my professional development.”
Throughout the programme, Karly completed a range of school placements and alternative educational placements, alongside specialist training and research projects that helped her develop a broad understanding of teaching and learning.
“I have had opportunities to complete placements in different educational settings, undertake training in a variety of areas, and carry out research projects that have really helped me develop as a teacher,” she said. “One highlight from my lectures was the ‘escape room’ with Tom Cox, which inspired me to think creatively and innovate in my own teaching practice.”
While balancing academic study, placements and social commitments presented challenges, Karly praised the support she received from both lecturers and fellow students.
“There have definitely been challenges, especially academically while juggling university work, placements and a social life. However, my lecturers have been incredibly supportive, and I have made amazing friends who have helped me through those challenges.”
Karly believes the course has prepared her exceptionally well for a career in education and would encourage others considering primary teaching to apply.
“I would definitely recommend the course to anyone looking to study primary education. The opportunities I have received have been invaluable, and the lecturers have been amazing – friendly, supportive and extremely knowledgeable. The course content has prepared me really well for the world of teaching.”
She added that the experience had brought significant personal as well as professional growth.
“Professionally, I have gained so much knowledge and had extremely valuable experiences that have prepared me to become a teacher. Personally, my confidence has grown tremendously, and I have pushed myself far beyond what I would have done before starting the course.”
Looking ahead, Karly plans to work as a supply teacher to gain experience across different age groups and progression steps before pursuing a permanent teaching position. She is also considering taking her skills overseas and applying for teaching opportunities abroad next summer.
