Immersive Minecraft Showcase brings Inclusive Learning to Life at UWTSD
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) hosted a Minecraft Immersive Showcase, bringing together pupils, students and staff to explore how immersive technologies can support inclusive and engaging learning experiences.
The event was delivered in collaboration with the University’s Institute of Education and Humanities, Swansea Business School, the Digital Experience and Engagement (DEE) team and Bantani Cymru, with support from UWTSD’s Recruitment and Outreach team.
Pupils with additional learning needs from across Swansea showcased their “ideal learning spaces”, developed using Minecraft. Their designs were presented in the University’s immersive room, allowing pupils to step inside and share their ideas in a highly visual and interactive way.
Alongside the showcase, pupils took part in virtual reality workshops, using interactive applications to build confidence, collaboration and decision-making skills.
Students from the Education Studies: Additional Learning Needs and Inclusion programme played an active role in supporting the day, working alongside pupils and helping to facilitate sessions.
Laura Hutchings, Digital Institute Lead for the Institute of Education and Humanities, said: “It was fantastic to involve our students in the event. It gave them valuable hands-on experience of working with pupils and using technology in a real-world setting, which is so important for their development as future practitioners.”
Glyn Jenkins, Digital Experience and Engagement Manager, added: “It was great to see learners from such a diverse range of backgrounds using the immersive room. This is one of many examples of how the space can be used to support meaningful civic engagement.”
Robyn Griffiths, Programme Manager at Swansea Business School, said: “What stood out was how the space helped them take that step beyond their comfort zone and start engaging with learning on their own terms.”
A teacher from Bishopston School commented: “It was an amazing and inspiring day. Pupils felt welcomed and fully supported, and the staff’s enthusiasm for their work made a real impression on everyone.”
The event highlights how immersive technologies can create inclusive and accessible opportunities for learners to express their ideas, build confidence and develop key skills in engaging and meaningful ways. It also reinforces UWTSD’s focus on real-world learning, connecting learners at all levels with the tools, experiences and support needed to prepare for future study, employment and wider participation in society.
