Lydia Perkins Turns Passion for Care into Future Enterprise
Lydia Perkins celebrates her graduation from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) Birmingham campus today after achieving a First Class Honours in BSc Health and Social Care.
Having spent 17 years working as a childminder, Lydia developed a passion for supporting others and helping families thrive. Motivated by her ambition to establish her own supported living and accommodation business, she decided to further her education and gain the knowledge and skills needed to progress within the health and social care sector.
“I developed a strong passion for caring for others and making a positive difference in people’s lives,” said Lydia. “As my interests grew within health and social care, I wanted to gain a recognised qualification that would support my future ambitions.”
Lydia chose the course because of its focus on leadership, safeguarding, person-centred care, legislation, and service improvement, areas she believes are essential for delivering high-quality care services.
Throughout her studies, she explored topics directly relevant to her career goals, including effective leadership in care settings, safeguarding vulnerable individuals, promoting independence, and understanding the regulatory standards required within supported living services.
One of the biggest challenges Lydia faced was balancing her studies alongside work and personal commitments. Through careful planning, organisation, and determination, she successfully managed her workload while maintaining high academic standards.
“The course challenged me to think critically, conduct independent research and reflect on professional practice,” she said. “Achieving a first class honours was a proud moment and reflected the commitment and effort I dedicated to my studies.”
Lydia believes the programme has strengthened both her professional knowledge and personal confidence.
“It has enhanced my understanding of health and social care practice, leadership and service delivery, while also increasing my confidence in my ability to achieve ambitious goals,” she said.
Following graduation, Lydia plans to continue her professional development while working towards establishing her own supported living and accommodation business.
“I hope to use the knowledge and skills gained through the course to create high-quality services that promote independence, dignity and positive outcomes for the individuals I support.”
