Sixteen years after leaving her teaching career in Nepal to build a new life in Wales, Jiban Bhusal is today graduating from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) in Swansea. Her Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PCET) marks the latest chapter in a determined journey to return to the profession she has always loved.

Originally from Nepal, Jiban, 43, worked as a schoolteacher before moving to the UK in 2010. After settling in Swansea, family circumstances led her to change careers and enter health and social care, where flexible working allowed Jiban to support her family while continuing to develop professionally.

Over the past 16 years, she has completed Level 2, Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications in Health and Social Care and progressed through roles including care assistant, deputy manager, registered manager and health and social care tutor. Despite building a successful career, Jiban’s ambition to return to teaching never changed.

“I wanted a qualification that would strengthen my teaching skills and support my long-term goal of becoming an educator again,” said Jiban.

She chose UWTSD’s Professional Graduate Certificate in Education because it prepares graduates to teach in colleges, universities, and vocational training settings.

“The course helped me become a more reflective and confident educator,” she said. “What stood out most was the way it combined educational theory with practical teaching, alongside the support and encouragement from the lecturers.”

Balancing study with family life was the biggest challenge, while adapting to academic writing at a UK university also took time.

“The constructive feedback, one-to-one support and welcoming learning environment helped me develop my academic confidence,” she said. “I was also fortunate to study alongside such supportive classmates.”

Jiban says the course has given her the confidence and direction to continue developing as an educator.

“I would recommend the PCET programme to anyone interested in teaching in further or higher education. It provides excellent professional development and creates opportunities for further study.”

Jiban plans to continue delivering high-quality teaching, learn Welsh and work towards a PhD. Her research interests include neurodiversity, additional learning needs, and mental health.
