Poets, Artists and Historians Gather for ‘Underscapes’ Event in Aberystwyth
Join the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) as we celebrate that Aberystwyth Ceredigion has become Wales’ first UNESCO City of Literature.
On 12 March 2026, 1.30 pm–6.00 pm, we’re holding an informal, creative, interdisciplinary event in the Drwm, National Library of Wales, on the theme of Underscapes.
Mixing readings and short presentations, we’ll explore how creative work and cultural history can inform environmental, scientific, heritage and community projects focused on peatlands or mining or soil. Speakers include poets, artists and historians - Elinor Gwynn, Sean Harris, Ioan Lord and Hilary Davies, with colleagues from the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies.
Events till 4.30 pm are in person only, and the afternoon will finish with a hybrid lecture at 5 pm by art historian Eleanor Stephenson on ‘Landscapes of Extraction: Philippe de Loutherbourg and the Morris Family’s Copper Works, Swansea’.
Professor Elin Haf Gruffudd Jones, Director of CAWCS said,

Professor Mary-Ann Constantine from CAWCS said, ‘Join us to see the world turned inside out! Underground perspectives make us reconsider the beautiful landscapes in which we live: literally, and imaginatively, we owe everything to the deep history of what lies hidden beneath our feet.’

The Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) was established by the University of Wales in 1985 as a dedicated research centre conducting team-based projects on the languages, literatures, culture and history of Wales and the other Celtic countries. It is located in Aberystwyth, adjacent to the National Library of Wales, which is an internationally renowned copyright library with excellent research facilities.
