Kamran Khan, 45, from Birmingham, will graduate with a first class honours degree in Health and Social Care, achieving a goal he once thought was beyond reach. Inspired and encouraged by his daughters, Kamran decided to take the leap into higher education while balancing family life, fostering responsibilities and work commitments.

Coming from a working-class background, Kamran said he has spent many years supporting his family and caring for others. His experience as a foster carer inspired him to study Health and Social Care, allowing him to build on his practical knowledge while gaining a deeper understanding of the policies, theories and practices that shape the sector.

“The biggest motivation for me was my daughters,” said Kamran. “They encouraged me to believe in myself and reminded me that learning doesn’t have an age limit. Their support gave me the confidence to apply for university and pursue something I had always wanted to do.”

Throughout his studies, Kamran enjoyed learning about the policies and frameworks that underpin health and social care services, as well as the range of community support available to individuals and families. Drawing on his experience as a foster carer, he was able to connect academic learning with real-life situations, making the course especially meaningful.

Balancing university work with life as a foster carer, home-to-school transport minibus driver, and father of six was not without challenges. However, through careful planning, determination and the continued support of his family, Kamran successfully completed his degree.

“The course has given me a much broader understanding of health and social care and strengthened the knowledge I use every day as a foster carer,” he said. “Personally, it has given me a huge sense of achievement and confidence. It shows that with hard work and determination, it’s never too late to learn.”

Kamran hopes to continue supporting children, young people, and families in the future, using both his academic learning and practical experience to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
