Student helps create graduation day while working towards her own

Tamara Sanches, a BA Leadership and Management Skills for the Workplace student at University of Wales Trinity Satin David (UWTSD) and Meetings and Events Planning Executive at InterContinental London – The O2, has helped deliver this year’s UWTSD London graduation ceremonies while working towards her own degree.

For most students, graduation day is a moment they experience from the audience or the stage. For one UWTSD student however, this year’s London graduation ceremonies offer a unique perspective. 

Originally from Portugal and now living in London, Tamara Sanches has built a successful career in the hospitality and events industry while pursuing her studies. As a Meetings and Events Planning Executive at InterContinental London – The O2, she is responsible for delivering major events and conferences, including this year’s London graduation ceremonies. Working closely with both university and hotel teams, Tamara played a key role in ensuring the ceremonies run smoothly, helping to deliver one of the most significant celebrations in the university calendar. 

Tamara said: “It’s especially meaningful because I am also a UWTSD student. It gives me a unique perspective, as I understand both the work that goes into organising such a significant event and the sense of achievement felt by the graduates. Knowing that I will soon be celebrating my own graduation makes it even more special.” 

Her journey at the University began with a desire to complement years of practical industry experience with academic knowledge. Driven by a passion for leadership, business and consumer behaviour, she chose to pursue higher education alongside a demanding full-time career. 

“It has always been important to me to keep learning. UWTSD gave me the opportunity to develop my understanding of leadership, business and management while continuing to work.” 

She completed a Certificate of Higher Education before progressing to the BA Leadership and Management Skills for the Workplace, finding immediate value in a course that connected closely with her day-to-day responsibilities. 

“The programme has helped me think more strategically, improve my decision-making and develop my leadership skills. What has stood out most is the supportive environment. Although the university maintains high academic standards, there is a genuine sense of community.” 

That sense of community has been an important part of her success. Balancing a busy career in the events industry with academic commitments has not always been easy. Tight deadlines, demanding schedules and the fast-paced nature of event management have required careful organisation and resilience. 

“Good organisation, time management and a strong support network have been essential. The encouragement from my family, colleagues and the UWTSD team has helped me stay focused and motivated throughout the journey.” 

Having spent months helping to ensure every detail of this year’s graduation ceremonies is in place for fellow graduands, she will soon have the opportunity to celebrate her own accomplishment alongside them.  

As she looks forward to that moment, her ambitions remain clear. 

“After graduating, professionally, I hope to continue progressing into leadership and management roles where I can combine my industry experience with the knowledge I have gained through my studies. More than anything, I hope to continue learning, taking on new challenges and making a positive impact on the people and organisations I work with.”
