Students at University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Carmarthen campus recently enjoyed an evening of conversation and connection in the company of graduates and employers.

Held at the Students’ Union and organised by the University’s Careers Pathway Team, the Student & Employer Networking Event offered attendees the chance to build confidence in their networking skills, gain insights into various industries, and create potential career-building relationships.

The event forms part of UWTSD’s ongoing commitment to employability and alumni engagement, reflecting the university’s dedication to supporting students beyond graduation and fostering strong connections between education and industry.

The evening began with an inspiring talk from guest speaker James Owen, a 2021 BA Filmmaking graduate from UWTSD. James is the founder of Stori Cymru, a thriving video production company based in Llanelli, which he established in 2019 while still studying.

Having previously worked in sales, James came to UWTSD as a mature student after discovering a passion for film and photography and finding the university right on his doorstep. He shared his journey from the Carmarthen campus, where hands-on experience with live industry projects helped build the confidence and skills he needed to launch his own business.

James emphasised how networking has played a crucial role in building his company over the years - from connecting with others in the industry to share insights and best practice, to meeting potential clients and securing work through events and professional relationships.

His involvement, as well as the attendance of other graduates, highlighted the power of alumni involvement and the strength of connections between past and present students within the UWTSD community.

Following James’ talk, attendees took part in a lively game of Network Bingo, designed to break the ice and encourage conversation in a friendly and relaxed way. The activity proved to be a great success, sparking interesting conversations and meaningful interactions. Many attendees left with new contacts, fresh inspiration, and a renewed sense of direction for their career journeys.

Emma Evans, Employability Project Coordinator for UWTSD’s Careers Pathway Team led the organisation of the event. She said:

“As a Careers Team, we understand how important building social capital is — and how difficult that can feel when you’re far from the employer market and don’t know where to start. Networking shouldn’t only be accessible to those who already have it.

“Through our Medr (the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research) funded Targeted Employability Support programme we help students furthest from the labour market to build confidence, skills, and real relationships — and our alumni are a critical part of making that possible, which is why it was great to hear James Owen’s career pathway.

“It was great to see the students and employers making connections and getting stuck in, and we look forward to hosting further events in the future.”
