On 5 October, the UWTSD Confucius Institute Chinese School successfully hosted its Open Day and Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations at the University’s IQ Building on the Swansea SA1 Waterfront Campus.

The event attracted over 100 students and their families, with teachers and university volunteers supporting the organisation and activities.

The morning programme began with a Youth Chinese Test (YCT) Certificate Award Ceremony, recognising students who had achieved Levels 2, 3 and 4. This was followed by a Student Homework and Handicraft Exhibition, which showcased outstanding homework, beautifully made Mid-Autumn Festival crafts and posters. These displays celebrated pupils’ creativity and effort in both language and cultural learning.

At the same time, families joined a series of interactive Mid-Autumn games designed to encourage parent-child teamwork and cultural exploration. Activities included the Mooncake Relay, Three-Legged Race, skipping, shuttlecock kicking, tag of war and more. The lively and engaging atmosphere encouraged children to work together, develop confidence, and enjoy learning through play.

In the afternoon, two parallel activities were offered. One classroom transformed into a vibrant “Happy Market”, where students exchanged toys, books and small gifts they had brought from home. The market encouraged children to practise conversational Chinese, negotiate fairly and share items with friends. Meanwhile, another group of families enjoyed the animated film Chang’an, offering a relaxed way to finish the day after the energetic morning session.

Parents shared warm feedback after the event. Many praised the balance of activities and the opportunity for families to experience Chinese culture together. One parent said, “It felt like a proper celebration, not just separate activities.” Another wrote, “Our whole family had such a memorable day. Thank you for creating these opportunities to celebrate Chinese culture together.”

Chinese School Head Teacher, Cindy Chen, commented: “This Open Day and Mid-Autumn Festival successfully showcased the students’ achievements and creativity, while offering families a joyful, hands-on experience of traditional Chinese culture. It’s a real community event at the heart of UWTSD’s Swansea campus.”
