The Photography Department at Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, is proud to present Soft Cover, a day-long celebration of the photobook as a dynamic medium for contemporary photographic practice. The event takes place on Friday, May 2 at Stiwdio Griffith, Dynevor Campus.

At the heart of Soft Cover is the launch of a new limited-edition photobook, spotlighting the work of ten emerging photographic artists selected through an international open call. The featured creators, comprising current students and recent graduates from 2022 to 2024, represent a vibrant global cohort pushing the boundaries of photographic storytelling through innovative book formats.

Throughout the day, from 10.30am to 5pm, attendees can explore a range of participatory workshops, artist talks, and curated discussions, including:

  • The Photocopy Club Workshop (10.30am to 4pm): A hands-on opportunity for visitors to turn their own digital images into physical zines, celebrating the DIY ethos of the photobook.
  • Book Club with Camille Relet (11am to 12pm): PhD candidate and Swansea alumna Camille Relet shares her favourite photobooks and insights into the medium’s narrative potential.
  • Artist Talk: Tom Pope on ‘Exterminating Martin Parr’ (1:30am to 2.30pm): An engaging discussion about Pope’s provocative live performance and experimental publication, created in collaboration with alumni publishers Folium and designer Johanne Lian Olsen.
  • Soft Cover Publication & Exhibition Launch (3pm to 5pm): The highlight of the event, officially unveiling the publication and a corresponding exhibition of featured works.

Soft Cover continues Swansea College of Art’s long-standing tradition of championing photobook innovation. The event brings together students, alumni, staff, and members of the public in celebration of photographic experimentation and international creative exchange.

Ryan Eynon-Moule, Head of Undergraduate Photographic Studies at UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art said“This is more than just an exhibition launch, it’s a celebration of the photobook as a vehicle for expression, collaboration, and critical thinking. We’re proud to give these emerging voices a platform and invite our community to discover the creative diversity represented in the ‘Soft Cover’ collection.”

The event is free and open to all, and the university encourages attendance from across the campus and wider community. For updates and behind-the-scenes content, follow the Photography Department on Instagram: @ffoto_swansea.
