A passion for classic cars and motorsport has taken Swansea student Cameron Andrews from uncertainty about his future to launching his own composites business and pursuing a career in high-performance engineering.

Cameron, who graduates from University of Wales Trinity Saint David this July with a degree in Motorsport Engineering, says his university journey “completely changed the direction” of his life.

“After comprehensive school, I honestly didn’t know what direction I wanted to take,” he said. “COVID limited opportunities and made it difficult to gain hands-on experience in the industry.”

Cameron continued his education at Gower College Swansea, where he studied Advanced Motorsport Engineering and spent one day a week at UWTSD. Encouraged by lecturers, he went on to achieve a distinction and secure a place at the university.

“Coming from my background, university was never something I expected to do,” he said. “But after putting everything into my studies at college, I achieved a distinction and received an offer from UWTSD.”

Cameron chose the course for its practical focus and industry links.

“I wanted a course that wasn’t just theory-based, but one that allowed students to gain real hands-on experience,” he said.

A defining part of his degree was joining the university’s MCR race team, where he developed a passion for composite engineering. He progressed from learning the basics to becoming number two mechanic for Car 40 and later Lead Composite Engineer.

“The experience taught me technical skills, teamwork, leadership, problem solving, and how to work under pressure,” he said.

Alongside his studies, Cameron founded his own business, CLA Composites, specialising in composite parts and repairs, and completed dissertation research into aeroelastic behaviour in composite rear wings using advanced engineering software.

“Personally, the course completely changed my confidence and mindset,” he said. “It showed me I’m capable of achieving far more than I originally believed.”

Cameron hopes to build a career in composite engineering within motorsport while continuing to grow CLA Composites.

“It has completely changed my life, both professionally and personally,” he said. “The experience taught me that determination and work ethic can take you a long way.”
