UWTSD graduate helps bring contemporary arts showcase to Swansea
A University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) graduate helped to bring an exciting programme of contemporary art to Swansea through her work with a London-based curatorial collective.
Hannah Henson, who graduated from UWTSD’s BA (Hons) Fine Art: Studio, Site and Context programme, is a member of Sediment Collective, an artist-run curatorial collective based in London that champions contemporary art in unconventional spaces.
The collective presented Convergence at Down by Here, the newly opened arts venue in the former Elysium Gallery on Swansea High Street. The event featured an evening of performances spanning music, sound, poetry, and conceptual art, accompanied by a light-based exhibition that audiences can explore throughout the evening.
The title Convergence reflects the coming together of artists from Swansea, Cardiff, London, Birmingham, Maryland, and Prague, highlighting collaboration across geographical boundaries and artistic disciplines.
The exhibition also celebrated the achievements of UWTSD alumni, with several graduates from the University’s Fine Art and Photography programmes exhibiting their work, including Beff, Pamella Gomes, Niamh O’Dobhain, Heidi Lucca-Redcliffe, Hannah Henson, Zee Ahmed, Amelie Warner, and Dione Jones.
Since graduating from UWTSD, Hannah has continued to develop her artistic and curatorial practice, recently completing an MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art.
Hannah Henson said: “Sediment Collective is passionate about creating opportunities for artists to present ambitious work in spaces that encourage experimentation, collaboration, and conversation. Bringing Convergence to Swansea felt particularly special because it connects artists from across the UK and internationally while celebrating the city’s vibrant creative community. It was also wonderful to return with a project that includes so many talented UWTSD graduates whose practices continue to evolve in exciting ways.”
Alexander Duncan, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at UWTSD, said: “Hannah has always demonstrated a thoughtful and collaborative approach to her practice, and it’s fantastic to see her building on that through Sediment Collective. Her commitment to creating opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with contemporary art in new ways reflects the values we encourage within our Fine Art programme. We are incredibly proud to see Hannah, alongside so many of our graduates, contributing to Swansea’s thriving cultural landscape.”
Sediment Collective, comprised of Hannah Henson, Pelencar, Ross Deeley, James Falls and Femmexy, is an artist-run curatorial collective based in London that focuses on bringing art into unconventional spaces and celebrating the texture, experimentation, and diversity of contemporary creative practice. Through Convergence, the collective brings together artists working across performance, installation, sound, and visual art to create an immersive evening of contemporary culture in the heart of Swansea.
