UWTSD graduate honours parents’ memory with Professional Policing degree

A Carmarthenshire graduate who overcame the devastating loss of both her parents while studying has celebrated graduating from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) with a degree in Professional Policing.

Twenty-five-year-old Tanith Coulson chose to study at UWTSD to develop her knowledge and skills, gain a recognised qualification and open up future career opportunities. Inspired by her A-Level studies in Criminology and a long-standing interest in the criminal justice system, she enrolled on the University’s Professional Policing programme.

Throughout her studies, Tanith gained valuable practical experience, including volunteering at the Help Point on Swansea’s Wind Street, where she worked alongside police officers and emergency services, and interviewing a police specialist as part of her dissertation research.

However, her university journey was marked by profound personal loss. After losing her mother at the age of 17, Tanith delayed going to university before eventually enrolling at UWTSD. During her third year, she also lost her father, making completing her degree an even greater achievement.

Tanith said: “When I started my degree, one of my biggest motivations was to complete it in memory of my mum. I never imagined that by the end of my university journey, I would also be doing it in memory of my dad.

“Balancing work, studies, and grief was exhausting, but I couldn’t have done it without the support from my lecturers and friends. Their encouragement helped me push through my dissertation, exams, and final assignments so that I could graduate. Losing both of my parents while pursuing my education has been the hardest challenge I have ever faced, which is why graduating is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

Tanith praised the support she received from academic staff and the opportunities the course provided.

She said: “The course has helped me become more confident and improve my communication skills. It also gave me opportunities to develop my leadership abilities, strengthen my time management, and build positive relationships with others. These experiences have made me feel much more prepared for future career opportunities.”

Tanith now plans to use the knowledge and skills she gained at UWTSD as she begins the next stage of her career.

She added: “For a long time, my focus was simply to finish university, especially after losing my dad. At times I genuinely didn’t think I’d be able to do it. Eight months later, I can proudly say that I did – I graduated. I’ve enjoyed my time at UWTSD, I’m thankful for all the opportunities, and I look forward to the next chapter of my life.”
