UWTSD graduate proves it’s never too late to pursue a law degree
A Swansea mum of three has graduated from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), proving that it’s never too late to achieve your ambitions.
Teresa Kan, 39, from Swansea, graduated with an LLB Law and Legal Practice degree after balancing her studies with work in financial services and raising her family.
After leaving comprehensive school, Teresa went straight into employment and didn’t pursue higher education. However, she always felt she had missed the opportunity to study at university and decided to explore her options later in life.
“I always felt drawn to Law because of the diversity of the subject and the practical element of the course,” she said. “My goal was to earn a Law degree while balancing work and raising a family, while also showing my children that with determination and hard work, you can achieve your goals at any stage in life.”
Teresa chose UWTSD because of the practical nature of the course and the University’s reputation. Her husband, who studied at the University when it was known as Swansea Metropolitan University, also encouraged her to take the leap.
“My husband had great things to say about his experience, and his positive memories gave me the confidence that it was the right place for me to begin my own journey,” she said.
Teresa began her studies during the Covid-19 pandemic, adapting to online learning while homeschooling two of her children and caring for her youngest son. After completing the first two years of her degree, she paused her studies due to work commitments before returning in October 2025 to complete her final year.
“Returning after several years away was daunting, but I was determined to finish what I had started,” she said. “Balancing full-time study with part-time work and family life required resilience and organisation, but graduating has made every challenge worthwhile.”
One of Teresa’s fondest memories of UWTSD was the warm welcome she received from lecturers when she returned to complete her degree.
“I was quite literally welcomed with open arms by some of my former lecturers, which eased any nerves I had about returning. It confirmed that I had made the right choice, not only in coming back to finish my studies but in choosing UWTSD.”
Alongside developing her legal knowledge, Teresa says studying while working in financial services helped strengthen her analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills, allowing her to apply her learning in a practical setting.
She would encourage others considering a career in law to take the course.
“It combines academic study with practical application, helping you develop not only legal knowledge but also the confidence and practical skills needed for a career in the profession.”
Teresa is already looking ahead to the next stage of her education. She will return to UWTSD this October to study for an MSc in Financial Management, with the aim of combining her legal expertise with her experience in financial services.
“Completing my degree has shown me that it’s never too late to achieve your ambitions, even if life takes you on a different path for a while. I’m proud I stayed committed to my goal and can now celebrate with my family. I’m excited to continue my studies and see where this next chapter takes me.”
