A mature student who swapped a 16-year career in engineering for higher education study has graduated with First-Class Honours from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), paving the way for a new career in primary education.

Tim Nicholas, 38, from Loughor, graduated from UWTSD’s Swansea campus with a BSc (Hons) Criminology and Policing after returning to education at the age of 35 while balancing family life and work.

Inspired by his two children, Tim wanted to demonstrate that learning and personal growth are possible at any stage of life.

He said: “My children have been my biggest inspiration throughout this journey, and I wanted to show them that it’s never too late to learn, challenge yourself, or work towards a new goal.”

During his studies, Tim combined his academic work with a mental health support volunteering placement, which led directly to a paid role supporting people in the community. His dissertation explored the relationship between ADHD, labelling theory and offending behaviour within the criminal justice system in England and Wales.

Tim said: “Graduating with a First-Class Honours degree is my proudest academic achievement. Completing a degree as a mature student has built confidence in my own intellectual ability and changed the way I think, read, and approach problems.”

Tim also praised the support he received from his lecturer, Laura Knight, whose academic guidance, and encouragement helped him navigate personal challenges while completing his studies.

Tim will return to UWTSD in September to study for a Primary PGCE, with the ambition of becoming a primary school teacher.

He said: “I want to be someone who makes a positive difference early in a child’s life. My studies in criminology and my experience in mental health support have strengthened my belief that education can play a vital role in shaping positive futures.”
