The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is introducing two new Psychology degrees with a Foundation Year at its Swansea campus to provide a route into a degree programme for those who may not have had the opportunity to study a university qualification. The Foundation Year is designed to prepare students for degree-level learning, with no prior psychology experience required.

The new programmes, Psychology including Foundation Year (BSc Hons) and Psychology with Counselling including Foundation Year (BSc Hons) are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and provide a supportive route into higher education while helping students build confidence, knowledge, and practical skills for future careers or further study.

Students will explore how psychology helps us understand some of today’s most important challenges, while gaining course-specific training and transferable skills valued by employers, including communication, critical thinking, research, and data analysis.

The Foundation year will introduce students to core areas such as social, developmental, biological and cognitive psychology, along with individual differences.  Students will also explore different ways of researching human behaviour.

Students continuing onto the degree courses develop a robust understanding of key psychological processes, including reasoning, memory, and language, alongside insight into neuroscientific processes and their impact on health-related behaviour.

Karen Eaton-Thomas, Foundation Year: Programme Manager said:

“Studying psychology with us at UWTSD isn’t just about learning the theories, it is about studying in a welcoming and supportive environment where you will feel safe to ask questions and develop confidence in your growing skills and abilities”.

Teaching across both programmes focuses on developing graduates who can evaluate evidence, understand behaviour, and apply knowledge in real-world contexts. Students benefit from dedicated Psychology and Counselling facilities, opportunities to develop workplace-relevant skills, and teaching from research-active and practitioner-based lecturers working closely with students. By the end of their studies, graduates will be well prepared for a wide range of careers or further academic study.

UWTSD’s teaching approach includes personalised support and smaller class sizes, which can be particularly valuable for students who may feel uncertain about returning to education.

Dr Judith Marshall, UWTSD’s Admissions Tutor, Psychology and Counselling, added:

“We encourage those who are interested in the course to visit our Open Days where they’ll have the opportunity to talk with academic staff, support services and view the facilities.”
