UWTSD Motorsport Team in top 3 finish at 2024 Sports 2000 Championship
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) student-led Motorsport team has achieved an outstanding finish in the highly competitive 2024 Sports 2000 Championship – a testament to the dedication, technical expertise, and teamwork of the students and staff involved in the university’s motorsport programme.

Car number 40, driven by Motorsport Programme Manager Tim Tudor and ex-champion Patrick Sherrington, was at the heart of this success. The team, composed of MSc, BEng, and HND Motorsport and Automotive Engineering students, played a pivotal role in maintaining and developing the car throughout the season. Their hands-on involvement allowed them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world motorsport challenges, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
The road to securing third place was not without its obstacles. Throughout the season, the team faced mechanical setbacks and on-track incidents. However, the students’ resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills ensured that car number 40 remained a strong contender in the championship.
The team’s second entry, car number 44, also had a commendable season. Driven by UWTSD Professor of Practice John Iley, the car delivered consistent performances across multiple rounds.
Alfie Morgan, a Motorsport Engineering student and the 2024 team leader said:
“Securing 3rd place in the championship this year is a true testament to the team’s hard work and dedication, both during the off-season and throughout the 2024 campaign. From long days in the workshop refining and developing the cars to late-night rebuilds at the circuit, every challenge pushed us to improve.
“Leading this team has been an invaluable experience, allowing me to develop technical expertise, managerial skills, and the ability to delegate effectively. Competing against real teams and drivers gave a great insight into what life is like in motorsport, which is not an opportunity many university students get.”
The UWTSD Motorsport programme bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, equipping dedicated students with a unique skill set that truly sets them apart.
This real-world exposure provides UWTSD students with a competitive advantage when pursuing careers in motorsport and automotive engineering. Graduates have gone on to secure roles at prestigious companies, including McLaren, Toyota Gazoo Racing, Andretti Global, Jaguar Land Rover, Gordon Murray Design, and MAHLE Powertrain.
Motorsport Programme Manager Tim Tudor expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishments adding: “The dedication and hard work of our students have been instrumental in achieving this result. Their commitment to excellence and continuous learning has been evident throughout the season.”
The UWTSD Motorsport Team is already setting its sights on the 2025 season, aiming to build upon their success, further refining their technical capabilities, enhancing the student experience.
