UWTSD Rugby Talent Sam Potter Selected for Dubai 7s
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is proud to announce that Physical Education student Sam Potter has been selected to play in the world-renowned Dubai 7s.
Since 1999, Dubai has held an annual Rugby 7’s tournament, and it is one of the biggest and most competitive rugby sevens tournaments on the global circuit.
Sam’s journey to the Dubai 7s began through his performances in the LIT 7s Series (London International 7s Tournament), where he played for the Preseli Babas. When the team were unable to attend the Dubai competition, the Sharks team invited Sam to join their squad. He said:
“I’m very excited to take part in one of the biggest 7s competitions in the world. I played in Hong Kong last year and now can’t wait to play in Dubai.”
Competing in Dubai is set to be a major milestone in Sam’s development both as a player and as a student. He added:
“It will help my rugby career by allowing me to play with and against high-quality players in a high-quality competition, and it will help me build links with students from other universities.”
Sam credits the UWTSD Academy of Sport for its role in helping him prepare for the challenge ahead.
“They’ve provided a full rugby service, including strength and conditioning and individual feedback, all of which has helped me improve my game.”
Sam, who studies Physical Education through the medium of Welsh, chose UWTSD for its unique combination of academic study, Welsh-medium teaching, and strong support for student-athletes.
Gareth Potter, UWTSD’s Head of Rugby, said:
“Delighted that one of our students has had this amazing opportunity. Sam has worked hard within the rugby programme to develop his skills, and this isa great reward for consistent performances for the University, his club Ammanford and his 7’s campaign over the summer with the Preseli Babas.”
Looking ahead, Sam hopes to return from Dubai with more than just sporting experience.
“I hope to enjoy the experience to its fullest, on and off the field.”
UWTSD’s Head of Academy of Sport, Lee Tregoning, said:
“Sam’s journey to the Dubai 7s is a testament to the hard work he puts in every day and to the performance environment we’ve worked to build at the UWTSD Academy of Sport. He has developed significantly over the last few years, both as a player and a person, and this opportunity is the next step in that journey. We’re incredibly proud of him and look forward to seeing him showcase his talent in Dubai.”
