UWTSD student reflects on transformative study abroad experience in Canada
Nina Campbell, a BA Set Design & Production student from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has returned from a lifechanging four-month study abroad placement in Vancouver, Canada, describing the experience as both personally and professionally transformative.
Supported by Taith funding and a UWTSD Study Abroad bursary, Nina spent a term studying at Douglas College, where she immersed herself in academic study, creative practice, and Canadian culture.
Reflecting on her time overseas, Nina highlighted the ease of her transition to life in Canada, crediting the support of Hannah Clayton, Kathleen Griffiths, and her lecturer, Stacey Jo Atkinson at UWTSD. She said:
“The transfer to Douglas College was seamless and easy. That support made such a difference and allowed me to focus fully on making the most of the opportunity.”
During her time in Vancouver, Nina quickly formed lasting friendships and embraced the opportunity to explore her new surroundings. From city life to nature, she took full advantage of the region’s landscape.
“I was able to go on plenty of hikes, including Deep Cove and a 28 Km hike up to Garibaldi Lake. I was also fortunate enough to experience Victoria Island and Whistler.”
Academically and creatively, Nina thrived. During the run of a production at Douglas College, she secured the role of Stage Manager, giving her hands-on experience across multiple areas of theatre production.
“For the run of our show, I was able to grab the position of stage manager, allowing me the opportunity to get to know people from all sorts of roles including; directors, set designers, costume designers and so many more. Sitting in production meetings each week really widened my mindset and knowledge of jobs and their roles within a show.”
Nina believes the experience has had a lasting impact on her confidence and outlook.
“I now know how easy it is to move somewhere completely new, not know anyone, and still build meaningful connections. I have no doubt that the friendships I made will be long-lasting.”
Although she found leaving Vancouver difficult, Nina is certain it is not goodbye forever.
“I was deeply saddened to leave my life of five months behind, but I know 100% that I’ll be back in the not-too-distant future.”
Kath Griffiths, who leads on International Mobility at UWTSD, said:
“Our relationship with Douglas College began in 2009, and we are delighted to continue exchanging students. Supported by the Taith programme, Nina made the most of her time on the Statecraft programme, achieving excellent academic results and earning a place on the Dean’s List.”
Nina recommends this experience to any student who thinks about studying for a semester abroad.
“If you have the chance to do something that you think sounds cool but you are not sure, just do it! There is a 0% chance you will regret it!”
