A last-minute change of degree course proved to be a turning point for UWTSD student Cheng CHEN, opening the door to new opportunities and setting him on the path to success.

Cheng Chen - BSc Applied Computing student

The former Gower College student had originally intended to study a different degree course but ended up choosing the BSc Applied Computing at UWTSD instead.

The late change saw Cheng, who is originally from Jiangsu in China, apply via the Clearing route.  He says:

“Before enrolling at UWTSD, I studied the BTEC course in Applied Computing at Gower College.  I chose UWTSD primarily because it offered an advanced progression from my previous studies and aligned with the type of curriculum I wanted to pursue.

“I ended up on this course through a change of plan. I contacted the university to discuss the situation, and I am very grateful that they reviewed my academic background and recommended the Applied Computing course instead”.

Daniel’s main goal in studying the Applied Computing degree was to gain an understanding of computing and its related fields, particularly as computing is a discipline that is vital to so many aspects of modern life across the world.

As he looks forward to graduating this month, Cheng has no regrets about changing course.  He says:  “A highlight of the course was the ability to choose specific modules each academic year based on personal interest - it’s a very student-friendly feature.

“Practical activities included network testing using Cisco equipment, identifying vulnerabilities using virtual machines, performing data analysis with Weka, and developing my own websites and software”.

Although he says that studying in a different language was sometimes challenging, he is grateful to the support he received from the University.

“I am deeply grateful to the UWTSD lecturers,” Cheng explains.  “They were incredibly patient and understanding of my situation, providing immense help with my studies.

“I would highly recommend this course. In today’s world, computing is vital, and this course offers a wealth of knowledge. The flexibility to choose modules that genuinely interest you is fantastic”.

The course also demonstrated the importance of critical thinking and the need to observe and understand contexts from multiple perspectives and Cheng is confident that the skills that he has gained will help him in his future career.
